#GoalDiggin

Meet Karina Cepeda, a senior at UM! Karina is a Public Health major and is minoring in Psychology, Public Relations, and Health Management and Policy.

Karina has been #GoalDiggin by taking advantage of several professional development opportunities such as UShadow and PDAcademy. She shares, “UShadow allowed me to delve deeper into the field I was interested in and gave me a sense of what it was like to be working in the real word. PDAcademy really helped me pinpoint my strengths and weaknesses and motivated me to be a more confident individual in the workplace. Additionally, having an amazing advisor like Carly Smith guide and mentor me in many different ways has been one of the best experiences.”

She was also #GoalDiggin at her most recent internship as a Care Coordinator Intern at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. “It was there that I was able to really showcase my work ethic and I really enjoyed the work I was doing. I was very proud of myself when they offered me a full-time position after graduation.”

Some advice from Karina: “Step out of your comfort zone. Apply for jobs that you feel you are not ready for and participate in things that you normally wouldn’t because you never know what opportunities may present themselves.”

Staying Organized on Handshake

Although Handshake can make the job search process more efficient, juggling multiple applications and keeping track of deadlines can still be stressful. Below are some tips on how to stay organized when searching for jobs and internships on Handshake:

• Use the “Employers” tab to look up companies and click “Follow” to save those that are of interest to you. These employers will then show up under “Following” on the left-hand side.

• Use filters to search for jobs and click the star next to the position title to “favorite” the ones you’re considering applying to. This makes it easier to come back to those jobs later and apply to them.

• Make a list of jobs you want to apply to in Excel or whichever platform works best for you, taking note of application deadlines, interview dates, and materials you need to submit (resume, cover letter, etc.).

• Keep track of your submitted applications and their status under the “Applications” tab.

• Check your notifications and messages daily for any updates.

Edward Cruz

Director Career Education

When I arrived to college in the fall of 1998, I can remember feeling sense of accomplishment that I made it! However, as the semester continued, this feeling quickly diminished. As a first-generation college student, I began to question if I belonged for a variety of reasons. However, through my perseverance and self-awareness, I quickly learned what I needed to do to become successful. During my sophomore year I became heavily involved on campus and began connecting with faculty and staff. Due to my experience as a first-generation college student, I have a passion for serving and mentoring first-gen students at the University of Miami. Outside of the office, I enjoy spending time serving my local church, capturing moments through photography, playing basketball weekly and raising an energetic and happy son, Benjamin, in partnership with my wife Juliana.
