Moving to a New City

Although it can seem daunting, part of your internship or post-graduation plans may include having to move to another city. This entails having to look for a place to live, researching the cost of living in the new location, adjusting to the move, and more. Consider the following resources that can help ease the transition:

Cost of Living Calculator: Plug in your current city and salary, and find out what salary you would need to maintain a similar standard of living in a new city.

Apartment Search: Browse open apartment listings, learn about the areas of town you are looking into, and save your favorites.

Roommate Search: Find other people in your area looking to save money on rent, and match based on compatability between your living styles.

Find the Right City: This article ranks the 50 best cities in the U.S. to live in based on population, average salary, quality of life, and a "value index" that considers all three. See if your desired city is on the list!

Negotiating a Salary

Salary negotiation can be nerve-wracking, especially if you’re starting a new job. However, it’s something that you must do if you want to get ahead financially and truly advocate for yourself. You’ll encounter this situation again whether you’re getting promoted, asking for a pay raise, or having to negotiate your salary at a new job.

Watch this video and check out these additional tips on salary negotiation:

Know your worth – have a number in mind and know your bottom line.

Research the range for your position – use resources like Glassdoor or PayScale to help you understand what the typical range for your position is considering your skills and level of experience.

Consider your budget and the cost of living – keep your current expenses in mind. If you’re moving to a new city, you want to negotiate a salary that will support the cost of living at your new location.

Wait for an appropriate time – consider your current state at the company and whether you think it would be appropriate to negotiate your salary at that time.

Practice your pitch – rehearse what you’ll pitch to the employer with friends and family to gain confidence and feel prepared when the time comes.
