Get #BossedUp Over Summer

Another academic year has flown by! After a year full of classes, exams, and long hours in the library, your summer plans probably include traveling and catching up on sleep. While this is well-deserved, make sure to find some time to get ahead on your career. You’ll thank yourself later for getting ahead in your free time.

Follow us on social media as we share several tips throughout the break on how to get #BossedUp in your career over summer!

The Biggest Hurdles Faced by Recent Grads

The transition from college to the professional world can be daunting, and oftentimes, you may find yourself feeling lost or overwhelmed.

In this article, the Harvard Business Review attributes these feelings to cultural differences young professionals face when they start their career. These differences include feedback, relationships, and accountability. Check it out!

The Quarter-Life
Crisis

Many students experience “The Quarter-Life Crisis” when they graduate from school and start their job. The job they thought would be their dream job may no longer be their passion and they feel stuck. The Toppel Career Center believes in the Chaos Theory of Careers, where our job paths are not always linear, and that our passions change as we change as people.

This Tedx Youth talk shows us that the only way to be truly happy is to do something you are passionate about, otherwise you will always be thinking the grass is greener on the other side.

Add Social Links to your Profile

Do you have unique skills or projects listed on platforms, such as LinkedIn, that you want recruiters to notice? Handshake has a cool feature that lets you link other social media pages right to your Handshake profile! Recruiters will then be able to easily access these other profiles to learn more about you. This is a great opportunity to showcase an online portfolio or personal website.

To add a social link, go to your Handshake profile and scroll down to the "Social Links" section on the right-hand side. Click the add button and select the platform you want to link. You will then be able to enter the unique URL that leads to your desired page.

Evan Eggers

Graduate Assistant Communication

My undergraduate experience taught me a lot about who I want to be, and what I need to achieve that goal. I would suggest that every student take advantage of an opportunity that may only be tangentially related to their career path. Even if that opportunity doesn’t lead to a new passion, it will still provide a glimpse into what others you may work with are experiencing, making it easier for you to foster a professional relationship with them. I did this as a junior when I took an internship at the local sports arena. I discovered a passion for live events that I hadn’t tapped into, simply because I was focusing on becoming an artist manager. Working as an intern at the Stockton Arena helped me develop new skills, and allowed me to apply my skills and knowledge from my artist management path to a new role.
