MakeMoves

#MakeMoves

Look who’s been making moves! Altaïr is a Senior majoring in Entrepreneurship & Marketing and minoring in Finance.

One of Altaïr’s passions is aviation, and he aspires to start his own airline company. This past summer he was the Product Development Intern at JetBlue on the interiors team, responsible for designing the interior for all JetBlue aircrafts. Altaïr has been great at coming into Toppel for career advising, practice interviews, and interview preparation. Way to go, Altaïr!

Some advice from Altaïr: “Start early! Don’t wait until your junior or senior year to get work experience. The summer of your freshman year is the time to gain an internship in a field you think you might enjoy. Use the time to really hone in on where your passion lies, whether it is in a specific industry or an overarching topic such as marketing. Once you figure that out, you can really use that passion or area of interest to guide your university career and make it what you want.”

#MakeMoves this semester like Altaïr and take advantage of all Toppel has to offer! Check us out at HireaCane.com.

Already making moves? Be an inspiration to your fellow classmates and email us at toppel@miami.edu with the subject “make moves” to share how. What is Professional Attire?

The first impression you make on a potential employer is incredibly meaningful and important. When you first meet, employers and graduate school representatives will form an assessment based on what you're wearing and how you carry yourself. Some tips to dress for success:

  • Err on the conservative side; it’s better to be over-dressed than under-dressed
  • Things to avoid: jeans, sneakers, flip-flops or sandals, wrinkled clothes
  • Look as polished as possible from head to toe, it shouldn’t look like you just rolled out of bed or came straight from class
  • Less is more! Keep your look simple but classic
For some outfit inspiration check out our Pinterest page.

If you're in need of some professional attire, check out Sebastian’s Closet.

Connect with Employers through Handshake

Was there company you’re interested in that wasn’t at the Career Expo? Use Handshake to connect with them!

  • Search for the employer you are interested in on Handshake and favorite their page.
  • Look for the email address of the company’s Recruiting Manager on their Handshake page under “Contact Information.” Consider emailing this person to express your interest and inquire about any job openings. Tip: make sure this email is worded very professionally and includes some background information about yourself; attach your resume if it’s polished and ready.
  • On the company’s Handshake page, see if any UM alumni work there who you can connect with. Again, be professional when emailing.
  • The company’s Handshake page also lets you know if they will be doing any events on campus in the near future.
