#LevelUp

Meet Joshua Stewart, a recent graduate who achieved his Bachelor of Science in Meteorology with minors in Sustainable Business and Mathematics in May 2022. Recently, he relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, where he will be starting his career with Deloitte & Touche LLP as a member of their Sustainability team within the Audit & Assurance group later this month.

In his role, he will be analyzing and assessing environmental, social, and governance data along with performing corporate sustainability reports to meet the needs of clients and the practice. Toppel has helped him #LevelUp by providing the resources and events necessary to network and learn successful interviewing tactics.

Piece of advice:
"I would advise current students to go to the career fairs Toppel hosts, even as an underclassman as the practice and exposure is always good. I would also recommend just going into Toppel and speaking with an advisor about any career inquiries that may arise. In regard to interviewing, make sure you utilize Big Interview. It is a site you automatically have access to as a UM student that allows you to practice interview questions and review your performance. Lastly, get started early and apply, apply, apply, but don’t let rejection discourage you, it is simply redirection! Keep a long-term goal in mind, and make sure your current steps are aligning with it. Some firms start recruiting as early as the summer before your senior year, so it is important that you stay organized and prioritize. Your senior year will fly by!"

Kylie Oquendo

Career Education Intern

Kylie Oquendo is a Junior Management and Real Estate major from “Upstate” New York. She is a part of the Alliance of Latin American Students and Women in Business to name a few. Last semester she had the chance to become a remote extern for PwC. Not only did she have to tackle this externship in the midst of all her classes, but she also continued her job at Toppel through it all. She says that the connections she made at Toppel allowed her to land that externship and that she could not be more grateful for her experience.

This year she is really excited to dive more into her major-specific classes; now that she has all of her prerequisites out of the way, she can focus more solely on her career path with the curriculum to help. She cites that challenging herself and taking risks has been the main contributor to her #LevelUp journey. Going outside of her comfort zone and putting aside her fear of rejection has allowed her to receive opportunities that she says she would have never expected.

Piece of advice: “Just keep trying. Rejection is scary and can be very disheartening, but to keep applying and continue going to the interviews no matter how many tries it takes and the perfect opportunity for you will occur.”
