#LevelUp

Meet Gayathri Samuel, a senior in Business Law & Finance and Founder & President of Hygiene for Women, a non-profit organization. Gayathri shared that after transferring to the U, she joined Cane2Cane, UM’s mentorship program, which connected her to several incredible alumni, current students, and leaders within the community. One highlight of hers was connecting with Miles Dotson, a UM alum and the managing partner and extraordinaire of Devland. Dotson quickly became a fantastic mentor to her, which ultimately led to her part-time job (Technology Writer & Content Producer/Undergrad Fellow) with Devland!

She says “Cane2Cane has significantly impacted my life in all areas, from personal, educational, and to my career journey. All of these elements are intertwined and have echoed into all areas. I'm grateful for this network of incredible alumni who are always quick to respond and provide valuable information.”

Advice from Gayathri: “One piece of advice I would share with students seeking mentorship is to simply reach out and go for it!”

Christine Lara

Career Coach

Christine Lara is a first-year Biomedical Engineering student with a minor in Philosophy. Originally from Venezuela but having grown up in Miami, she currently is a part of the Association of Commuter Students (ACS) and Biomedical Engineering (BMES), but soon hopes to join Atlas and take part in a Salsa class.

One way she says she had to #LevelUp is by challenging herself academically. As a first-year student taking both calculus and physics while also working a job…it has not been the easiest, but she is taking it one step at a time to #LevelUp. Challenging herself academically has also led to building friendships because they’re all going through the same thing and want to work together.

Best Advice

“Take everything one day at a time – I tend to want to get everything done as soon as possible, but that can be very overwhelming and stressful, which is not healthy. Therefore, I like reminding myself to take everything one day at a time.”
