#BreakThru

Meet Abigail Adera! Abigail is a sophomore majoring in Public Health and Geography. She spent her summer working for the Citrus County Mosquito Board in her hometown as a Disease Surveillance Intern. Abigail says she has to #BreakThru imposter syndrome – feeling that she isn’t “cut out” for the opportunities that come her way. Utilizing Toppel resources for professional development and embracing her roles has helped Abigail to realize her potential.

Some advice from Abigail: “The coolest, most successful journalists on CNN, the fastest day traders on Wall Street, and even Oprah alike all experience bouts of insecurity. The big secret? Working through the insecurity. Bravery is not the absence of fear; bravery lies in recognizing the fear and jumping in anyways.”

Best Advice?

Everyone’s path is unique in design. It’s important to seek out opportunities based on your personal interests or based on where you see yourself developing in areas you might not be most comfortable in, and those opportunities are not necessarily the same for everyone.

#BreakThru Story?

Coming from a home environment that was not very welcoming nor supportive, huge leaps of faith were necessary for me to get where I am today. From moving out earlier than most and risking homelessness to meeting strangers from the internet for a place to stay, my path was filled with obstacles I overcame through faith, determination, and a drive to beat my odds.
