#BossedUp
Meet Mariana Scarpellini de Carvalho Rego, a Journalism graduate student graduating in May.
Last summer Mariana got #BossedUp by working as an Event Support Specialist at UM’s Intensive English Program (IEP). Through this job opportunity she had the chance to improve the skills she had learned in her classes such as video production, but also was inspired to pursue new interests like graphic design.
Mariana says that she had no previous graphic design experience prior to this role but that her supervisor, Caroline, taught her how to start. Mariana says: “My supervisor introduced me to some incredible tools that made me fall in love with designing and, because of that, I am currently enrolled in an advanced level class of Graphic Design and am now working on the University’s Yearbook as a designer.”
Some advice from Mariana: “Visit Toppel and get all the information you need to get ready for an opportunity. Don’t keep on waiting for things to happen, make them happen! Prepare your resume and Linkedin profile, write a cover letter, and participate in the events and workshops Toppel offers. Getting #BossedUp is easier when you are being assisted!”

Tips for Your Internship Search
Don’t let summer sneak up on you. If you are interested in finding a spring or summer internship, now is a great time to get organized, do your research, get your materials together, and determine a plan of action. This article from The Balance Careers provides some steps you can take to prepare for the summer internship application process.
One thing to keep in mind is that the internship application process will be a bit different depending on your career field. For example, the process for engineering and accounting internships is strictly structured and applications open early in the fall. On the other hand, internships for students interested in photography or marketing careers could be quite different. For more tips on getting ready for summer internships visit Toppel and meet with an advisor.

Campus Talent

“In college, I made a lot of mistakes. I was unsure of my path in life and really took a lot of risks regarding my professional and academic life. Despite my uncertainty with my career and professional life, I was highly involved on my college campus. I volunteered to assist the Veterans Center with academic and financial advising for Veterans transitioning from Military to Civilian life. I was also involved with the Veteran’s Student Association, Runway (fashion show club), and the Student Center. I was a building manager for my entire collegiate career and was involved with orientation for 3 years. My proudest moment in my life was graduating with my master's and furthering my education. If I could give advice to my younger self, it would be to tune into my talents earlier.”
