#BounceBack

Meet Mia Porter! Mia is from Atlanta, GA, and double majors in Africana Studies and Sociology with minors in Management and Communications. She recently secured a full-time job with Tik Tok working in Talent and Acquisition for all business-related recruitment. In this role, Mia will be reaching out to candidates, reading applications, and interviewing as well as working to implement diverse and equitable practices in the company's recruiting foundation. Mia found this job on Handshake under her recommended jobs and used Toppel to help guide her through the application process.

Some advice from Mia: Go for everything. It sounds cliché, but the worst answer that you can get is “no.” You never know who will be on the other side of the interview table, so be unique and truthful in your answers, because you may connect with someone over something unique that you all have in common. Be persistent. Be authentic. Be passionate.

Spring Job & Internship Expo

It's finally here! The Spring 2022 Job and Internship Expo is back in person this week. Join us at the Watsco Center on Wednesday, February 23rd from 1:00-5:00 for UM's signature recruiting event. Explore internship options and full-time job opportunities both locally and nationally.

The Job & Internship Expo attracts companies from various industries including business, healthcare, communication, government, non-profit, science, technology and more! Students from all majors are encouraged to attend. Be sure to register now!

How Can You Prepare For Expo?

Looking for ways to prepare for Expo? The first thing you can do is check out the list of companies that will be attending the event on Handshake. Do some background research on the employers who are attending, and prepare a short Elevator Pitch to sell yourself and your qualifications.

During the event, make sure you are dressed professionally and come with copies of your resume. You can visit Drop-In Advising from 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM during the week to get your questions answered before the event.

BreakThru Meet-Up: Diversity Recruiting

BreakThru Meet-Up: Diversity Recruiting will create a space for our Black, Indigenous, & People of Color (BIPOC), First-Generation, LGBTQ+, and students with disabilities at the University of Miami to connect with employers who value and promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging prior to the Job & Internship Expo. The event is co-sponsored by Student Government, Multicultural Student Affairs, Office of Academic Enhancement, and the LGBTQ Student Center.

This event will take place on Tuesday, February 22nd from 5:00 - 7:00 PM via Zoom, where you will be placed in Breakout Rooms to network with employers and learn more about their DEIB initiatives.

Keep moving forward and fight for what you believe in; never lose sight of who you are. This has stayed with me throughout my journey and has helped me to #BounceBack from many obstacles and setbacks. I’m immensely grateful for every obstacle I’ve faced, because they have helped me grow into the person I am today. For me, obstacles in the path of life are simply opportunities for growth.
