#BounceBack

Meet Vanessa Bonilla! Vanessa is a junior, double majoring in Motion Pictures Screenwriting and Broadcast Journalism. She is the President of the Colombian Student Association on campus and a studio reporter on UMTV. Vanessa has been very active with Toppel, and as she shares, her initiative has allowed her to become career ready:

"Toppel helps me be more confident in sharing my abilities and trusting myself when applying for internships. I meet with my advisor every week to go over cover letters, resumes, and practice for interviews. I was fortunate enough to get internship experience last summer with Latina Noticias, a Spanish news media group targeting the Latino communities in Miami. I was their Lead Student Reporter, and I wrote, produced, and directed news stories that highlighted local Latino businesses showing the true “American Dream”. I also reported & investigated live on the field during the Cuban protests that affected the Miami community."

The event is co-sponsored by Student Government, Multicultural Student Affairs, Office of Academic Enhancement, and the LGBTQ Student Center.

This event will take place on Tuesday, February 22nd from 5:00 - 7:00 PM via Zoom, where you will be placed in Breakout Rooms to network with employers and learn more about their DEIB initiatives. Register here today!

Best Advice

Make an effort, not an excuse. I feel as though fear makes it really easy to make excuses for things, when it is just as easy to work harder.

#BounceBack Story

#BounceBack Story: I’ve had to #BounceBack to achieve career goals simply by dealing with everything that came with the last year, internalizing it, and learning from the difficult experiences. This was a period of rapid growth which allowed me to establish clear career goals, focus on tangible steps toward achieving them, and eliminate distractions that would deter me from them. After having a plan in mind, I was able to land a Graphic Design Internship along with multiple freelance opportunities for the summer of 2021.
