#BounceBack

Meet Lizzie Arthur! Lizzie is a senior majoring in Marketing. She has attended many Toppel career events, including last year's Employer Practice Interviews and Critiques (EPIC), where she connected with a recruiter from RBI. Lizzie did research about the company values, industry trends, and connected with two UM alums who work for the company. Through these efforts, Lizzie was able to secure a full-time position with RBI!

Some advice from Lizzie: Finding a job as a full-time student working a full-time job can be very draining. I sometimes struggled to perform my best on applications and video interviews. It's important to block off time to focus on the various aspects of your life, and don't be afraid to use all your resources. Alumni, Toppel, professors, LinkedIn, and Handshake are all amazing and beneficial.

Take Your Own Professional Headshots at Home

Headshots are an important part of your professional brand and a great way to make your profile stand out on Handshake or LinkedIn. If you’re looking to take a great headshot from home this semester, no need to buy a fancy camera! Your mobile phone can take a high-quality picture, if you pay attention to the details. Pick a background that is clean and non-distracting. Consider your outfit, the angle, and finishing touches that you can add to polish your headshot.

Check out this guide for taking professional-looking Headshots at Home on our website. It’s a good idea to spruce up your Handshake profile with a professional headshot before attending the Job & Internship Expo on the 23rd.

Ghosting involves cutting off communication with an individual or group without an explanation or advance notice. You may be familiar with this term as it relates to the dating world. However, “ghosting” can also be relevant to the workplace, specifically with job seekers who may not show up to interviews, stop communicating with potential employers during a hiring process, or even not show up for their first day of work after accepting an offer. Ghosting a potential employer has its consequences, including the potential of ruining your professional reputation.

Follow these tips and email templates from the Muse to help you identify the best way to communicate with a potential employer, instead of ghosting them. Remember, all it will take is one quick email to not burn any bridges or hurt your professional image.
