#BounceBack

Meet Isabelle Farah! Isabelle is a junior majoring in Entrepreneurship with a minor in Creative Advertising. She recently placed third out of 32 applicants in the 20th Anniversary Business Plan Competition with the Miami Herbert Business School. She received a grant of $5,000 which she hopes to use for her new dating app idea called Limin' where users can connect with people in their network and plan and schedule fun dates right on the app. Outside of her business venture, she is in the professional business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi and the sorority Pi Beta Phi. Isabelle will also be interning with Chewy this summer as a Business Analyst.

Some advice from Isabelle: "Never lose faith in yourself. If you have an idea for something that you are passionate about, then put in the work to make that idea a reality. Don't be worried about failing. You learn so much along the way that you can use for the next time you pursue a new idea. As Michael Jordan said, 'to learn to succeed, you must first learn to fail'."

How To Negotiate Your Salary

Some of us are evaluating offers from jobs that we’ve applied to. Congratulations on receiving those opportunities! Now comes the interesting part: negotiating your salary and benefits package. Many of us have never had a position that offered a negotiable pay rate, so this is new territory. Whether you’re new to such practices or you’re just looking to improve your skills, Handshake is here to help. Click here to read Handshake’s tips on what to consider, when to make an ask, and how to know the amount you should ask for.

Do you have an internship for summer 2022? If you are a full-time UM undergraduate student and you are NOT graduating this spring, the Toppel Internship Fund could help reduce the financial challenges of your summer internship. Through the generosity of members of the University of Miami Parents Council, we are able to offer competitive awards of $500 up to $3000 for undergraduate students who accept unpaid and paid internship opportunities. The internship must be taking place during the summer and it can be a paid or unpaid position.

Interested? Read more and apply on our website by April 29th.

Wouldn’t it be great if you knew exactly what questions a hiring manager would be asking you in your next job interview? We can’t read minds, unfortunately, but this article from The Muse has the next best thing: a list of 50 of the most commonly asked interview questions, along with advice for answering them all.

Jaylon Virgil

Graphic Design Intern

Jaylon Virgil is a sophomore from Washington, D.C. majoring in Computer Science. Outside of Toppel, Jaylon is part of the PRISM program (Program for Integrated Science and Math), UM Boxing Club and B.O.N.D (Brothers Overcoming Negativity and Destruction).

Best Advice:

Make an effort, not an excuse. I feel as though fear makes it really easy to make excuses for things, when it is just as easy to work harder.

#BounceBack Story:

I’ve had to #BounceBack to achieve career goals simply by dealing with everything that came with the last year, internalizing it, and learning from the difficult experiences. This was a period of rapid growth which allowed me to establish clear career goals, focus on tangible steps toward achieving them, and eliminate distractions that would deter me from them. After having a plan in mind, I was able to land a Graphic Design Internship along with multiple freelance opportunities for the summer of 2021.
