#BounceBack

Meet Alexandra Moutafis! Alexandra is a sophomore majoring in Microbiology and Immunology on the pre-medical track. Searching for internship opportunities during a pandemic has not been easy for her, but she has been able to #BounceBack thanks to her perseverance and in collaborating with Toppel and the Butler Center. Alexandra is starting a volunteer research internship at Oliver Pyatt Centers in Miami, an opportunity she found on Handshake. There, she will be helping their research team conduct a large-scale study on eating disorder treatment effectiveness and ways to improve the field.

Some advice from Alexandra: Don't be afraid to reach out to people! Taking initiative will make employers notice you and people will remember you for future positions.

Saving Jobs on Handshake

When you log into Handshake, you’ll see personalized job recommendations based on your profile and interests. As you search and save jobs you like, your recommendations update and become even more relevant. This will make it easier to get to the jobs you want! To save a job in Handshake, click the bookmark icon located on the right side of the job preview, or on the left side of the job page. You'll be able to access them easily on your dashboard and in the Saved tab on the job search page. Then, check out the new opportunities that Handshake recommends. You'll also receive important notifications, including reminders to apply before the deadline.

Best Practices for Following Up

Once you meet with a recruiter, it’s very important to follow up in a professional way. This keeps the relationship going beyond the initial meeting, and it can keep your name in the conversation for potential jobs and internships with the company. Check out this article for some follow-up best practices.

Jailah Williams

Front Desk Intern

Jailah Williams is a senior from Miami, Florida majoring in Criminology with a minor in Political Science. Outside of working at Toppel, some of her involvements include the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., Caribbean Students Association, and President's 100. She is most looking forward to graduating this semester. Something that she wishes she knew during her previous years is "although college is some of the best years of your life, it can also bring some of the most challenging moments in your life too. You can't pour from an empty cup, so it's okay to say no, to take a break, and to prioritize yourself."

Best Advice?

Take the risk - sometimes the thing you're most in denial about is your biggest blessing.

#BounceBack Story?

Jailah learned to #bounceback this year by "viewing adversity as something that happens for me, not to me. In other words, viewing hardship as an opportunity for growth".
