#BounceBack

Meet Isaiah Holmes! Isaiah is a 4th-year Architecture major from Chicago. Isaiah is the President of American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), the Vice Polemarch of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, the Treasurer of Art for Kids, the Historian of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, and a member of United Black Students, among other on-campus organizations. He also works as an Architecture Peer Advisor here at Toppel. Last semester, Isaiah had to #BounceBack after going home to take care of his parents. He was temporarily disengaged from school/career goals and found it overwhelming to balance work and home life simultaneously, but says that the process caused him to reflect on his situation. Isaiah developed a personal recovery plan that aligned with his career goals, and he has made strides in his professional development.

Some advice from Isaiah: Understand the importance of having a mentor to provide a new perspective.

Virtual Job & Internship Expo

It’s time for the Virtual Job & Internship Expo! Be sure to register and join us on Wednesday, September 22 from 1:00 – 5:00 PM. The Job & Internship Expo attracts a variety of companies from different industries including business, healthcare, communication, government, non-profit, science, technology, and more. Meet 1:1 with recruiters in a virtual setting, gain exposure to a broad spectrum of career paths, and learn about local and national internships and full-time positions.

You can check out the full list of companies that will be attending here.

Virtual Career Fair Tips

With the Fall Job & Internship Expo taking place virtually, it’s even more important to be prepared and to have a plan going in. In advance, make sure you update your Handshake profile with your current resume and interests (employers will be using this to learn more about you). Do some background research on the employers who are attending, and prepare a short Elevator Pitch to sell yourself and your qualifications.

During the event, make sure you are dressed professionally and in a quiet place. Be on time, engaged, and ask questions to the recruiters. Then, make sure to follow up after the event by applying to open jobs or internships.

BreakThru Hour

BreakThru Hour is back! This first hour of the Job and Internship Expo will create a space for our First-Gen, Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), and LGBTQ+ student population at the University of Miami to connect with employers who value and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. The event is taking place from 12:00-1:00 PM on Wednesday, September 22nd, immediately before the rest of our Job and Internship Expo sessions. Students should register for the event here and check out the full list of companies that will be in attendance.

For many, working remotely is the definition of “living the dream.” If you’re one of those people, you’re in luck! Remote work is on the rise, and for good reason: research shows that people who are allowed to work remotely can be more productive and less stressed than people who are required to work in an office. That said, it’s still not always easy to find remote jobs, let alone get hired for them.

Check out this article for tips on how and where to look for remote opportunities and how to stand out as a stellar candidate in a virtual job-search.

Best Advice?

The way you see yourself is the way you will treat yourself, and the way you treat yourself is what you become.

#BounceBack Story?

I was not able to balance my work, interests, and activities this year and had to step back from some opportunities I was looking forward to. But I am now appreciating the vitality of work-life balance and learning how to move forward and maintain this balance. I have had the opportunity to spend more time enjoying the city and learning about myself with a more balanced schedule. I’ve also been able to really invest myself in my commitments and build relationships with co-workers, professors, and peers.
