#BounceBack

Meet Nkosi Robinson! Nkosi is a senior majoring in Marketing with a minor in International Business. He has made use of Toppel services throughout his time at UM, including attending fairs and events, using Handshake, and working with peer advisors and other Toppel staff. Nkosi is currently interning with Business Insider as an Events Intern, where he assists the Insider Events team with the planning and execution of internal events, editorial conferences, and custom events. He says he knew rejection would be a natural part of his career journey, but that feedback from Toppel has helped him to #BounceBack and find new opportunities.

Some advice from Nkosi: Make use of the experience you have outside of the classroom, such as student organizations, to help you stand out, and mention them to employers. Also, try to be positive throughout the job search process because it can be very intimidating, but things will work out.

Why You Should Be Following Employers

Looking for a great way to connect with employers on Handshake? Follow them! There are more than 500,000 employers hiring students on Handshake, and you can follow employers you like by clicking the "Follow" button at the top of their page or preview card. By doing so, you'll receive notifications when they post new jobs and events or are attending one of UM’s virtual career fairs. Your job recommendations from Handshake will also improve and become more relevant. Plus, when an employer views your profile, they can see that you follow them. Showing mutual interest in their organization could help you receive a message or virtual event invitation.

When you’re working remotely, it can be difficult to meet new coworkers without impromptu in-office moments to connect. Here are three tips for connecting with coworkers from your remote workspace:

  1. Schedule virtual coffee chats
  2. Attend after-work events
  3. Chat about hobbies or interests
Read more about these and other tips to connect here.

The Toppel Career Center is looking for motivated, engaged, and strong communicators with an appreciation for diversity and aptitude for helping and developing professional skills in their peers. Peer Advisors play a critical role in guiding students through the exploration of their strengths, interests, skills, and abilities. They will prepare students to effectively engage and connect with employers and industry leaders.

Applicants must qualify for federal work study or Lead Miami. You can learn more about the role/qualifications and apply here.

Suraya Buffong

Peer Advisor

Suraya Buffong is a senior majoring in Psychology and Criminology with minors in Human and Social Development and Social Sciences in Medicine. Outside of Toppel, Suraya is a member of Psi Chi and is completing her induction into the Psychology Honor Fraternity.

Message from Suraya:

The best advice I have ever received is work on yourself and the people who are meant for you will grow beside you. This year was difficult since I was online most of the time, so it was hard to connect and still get involved. However, I made an effort to reach out to peers, mentors, and community members in order to maintain that connection while I was remote. I even got to start research studying minority stress is Latina women which has been an amazing opportunity!
