#BreakThru

Meet Samantha Nowak! Samantha is a first year architecture major and an active member of Cane2Cane - our platform that allows students to explore career pathways and prepare for the workplace by helping them find career mentors. Samantha is using Cane2Cane to #BreakThru and connect with UM alumni in her field of interest, including a Project Manager at IA Interior Architects. She was able to learn about the day-to-day responsibilities of this profession and gain advice about how to pursue these kinds of opportunities. Samantha has applied this knowledge to a summer internship opportunity in her hometown at Maier Design Group!

Some advice from Samantha: I encourage all students to take the time and make connections on Cane2Cane! You could make important relationships with professionals and learn valuable guidance. I feel better prepared and knowledgeable about my future. I learned how to professionally reach out and ask specific questions to attain my goals.

Nicaila Matthews Okome is a podcast host and marketing specialist hailing from New York City. She is the host of the Side Hustle Pro podcast, which shares her own experience of turning her “side hustle” into a thriving business. She also highlights the journeys of Black women entrepreneurs. The podcast has garnered over 3 million listens since its launch in 2016.

This fascinating talk highlights the history of the term “hustle” and “side hustle.” Did you know that the term “hustle” was first used in African American newspapers as early as the ’20s to refer to less-than-legitimate work? By the ’50s, papers were using the term “side hustle” to refer to honest work.

Okome uses this history as context to define what truly represents a “side hustle.” Unlike a second job, a “side hustle” is rooted in your passion, and in an aspirational spirit. Check out more here.

Best Advice?

After starting on a path, it is okay to change course if you realize it is no longer for you. You should never feel stuck in a “place” where you are unhappy because of a decision you made.

#BreakThru Story?

I had to #BreakThru my fear of public speaking because I am an introvert. Initially, it was difficult for me to feel comfortable speaking in front crowds and initiating conversations with new people. I had to insert myself in uncomfortable situations in order to overcome my anxiety. After becoming more comfortable with public speaking, I have been able to extend my professional network, participate as a student ambassador for the School of Communication, and I have recently been asked to participate as a panelist for an event this semester. I look forward to taking on more speaking engagements in the future.
