#BreakThru

Meet Landon Coles! Landon is a junior studying Political Science with double minors in Business Law and Strategic Communications. He hopes to attend law school and serve in public office at the federal level. He is the President of United Black Students and is the newly elected Student Government President-Elect for 2021-2022. Landon is also the inaugural recipient of the 2021 Toppel BreakThru Award, given for his work in creating safe spaces for students of color and speaking across differences as the inaugural director of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our undergraduate student government.

Some advice from Landon: Remain cognizant that diversity, equity, inclusion are not easy ideals to aspire for. The natural companion of diversity is friction and disagreement. However, success and progress are leased, never owned, and rent is required everyday through putting our best foot forward and striving to be kind in all ways possible.

We want to take this opportunity to spotlight one company that is helping essential workers and black business owners – and it’s a pretty cool story! Uncle Nearest whiskey was started to honor the legacy of Nathan “Nearest” Green, the nearly forgotten godfather of Tennessee whiskey.

This past year, Uncle Nearest has gone above and beyond to help first responders and workers stay both employed and protected. The company turned its distillery visitor’s center into a mini distribution hub for masks and supplies to support front-line workers. The company – and CEO Fawn Weaver – has also taken an active role in the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement. Weaver started the Black Business Booster program to assist up-and-coming spirit enterprises.

Interested in learning about career options in Marine Science? Check out the Virtual Marine Science and Conservation Career Fair on Wednesday, March 24th from 4:00-6:00 PM. This event will provide a virtual environment where students can interact on a group session and one-on-one basis with recruiters from a variety of industries. Learn from the experts about the value of internships and working in the industry.

This event is part of Ocean Awareness Week, an annual event with the mission to spread awareness and educate students about the time-sensitive conservation issues our oceans face. This year’s beneficiary is Shark Trust and their No Limits? Campaign, an initiative aiming to establish science-based catch-limits to be set for at-risk shark species.

#BreakThru Story?

I’ve had to navigate being a first-generation college student while maintaining academic success. Oftentimes, I feel one step behind of my peers or even that I’m out of the loop on certain things. I’ve overcame this by surrounding myself with an amazing support system within the Toppel Career Center and through my student organizations. Pre-COVID, I was offered a position to intern with the U.S. Department of State. The program was unfortunately cancelled, but I am so grateful for the experience.
