#BreakThru

Meet Laura Brueggeman! Laura is a Junior majoring in Political Science with minors in International Studies and Ecosystem Science & Policy. Her #BreakThru story started with hard work in her first semester of freshman year. Laura has used Handshake and resume advising at Toppel to improve her chances of securing a position, and she has also participated in UShadow. In Spring of 2020, she was a Congressional Intern at the District Office of Rep. Donna Shalala, and she received course credit through the Toppel Internship Program. She was responsible for answering calls, helping constituents who came to the office, writing letters on behalf of the Congresswoman, and completing projects with other interns.

Some advice from Laura: "Don't limit yourself, and be open to trying new things! Apply to a wide variety of jobs/internships, and take classes in a broad range of areas even if you don’t know a lot about the subject."

“From a talent acquisition perspective, COVID-19 is requiring us to rethink how we can engage our talent pipeline in a virtual environment, in both the short and long term, and how we can use digital tools to our advantage in order to build the strongest and most diverse possible talent pipeline,” says Rod Adams, talent acquisition leader for PwC.

Best Advice?

Make good choices. My mom used to say this to me every morning before school.

#BreakThru Story?

During my sophomore year, I was applying to a lot of internships at major companies; however, because of the COVID-19 pandemic many of the internships I hoped to receive were cancelled. Luckily, I was able to find an awesome internship with a small boutique communications firm and got a lot of advice and one-on-one experience that I may not have gotten at a larger company. I have been able to add many skills and certifications to my resume which have helped me secure another internship with an independent influencer. Additionally, many of the business tactics I learned will be helpful for my own business in the future.
