#BreakThru

Meet Andrew Whigham! Andrew is a fourth-year student in the B.S./M.S. program in Biomedical Engineering, with a Mechanical Concentration. For the Fall Career Expo, Andrew facilitated a prep session with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), and Brothers Overcoming Negativity and Destruction (BOND) where students reviewed resumes, cover letters, and impactful interviews with employers. He says attending Career Expo was a great experience for him:

“I thought I was very prepared to represent myself in front of recruiters. I pitched information about who I am, what I look for in a company, and educational background. I was surprised at how accessible larger companies were via their recruiters and how receptive they were about aligning my interests with positions in their organizations.”

Career Expo

It’s time for the Spring 2021 Career Expo!! Are you looking for a job or internship? Make sure you’ve registered on Handshake and check out the full list of employers attending. The event is taking place virtually on Wednesday, February 24th from 1:00-5:00 PM. Employers will host group sessions, which last 30 minutes each and can be attended by multiple students, and 1-on-1 sessions with recruiters in time slots of 10 minutes. Sign up for these sessions in advance so you don’t miss out on a chance to talk to your ideal employers.

Make a list of the employers you want to speak with, and do some research about their products/services. Generate a few questions that you have, brush up on your elevator pitch, spruce up your resume, and think about how you can maximize your time with each employer.

Attending Virtual Career Fairs on Handshake

With Spring Career Expo taking place virtually, it’s even more important to be prepared and to have a plan going in. In advance, make sure you update your Handshake profile with your current resume and interests (employers will be using this to learn more about you). Do some background research on the employers who are attending, and prepare a short "Elevator Pitch" to sell yourself and your qualifications.

During the event, make sure you are dressed professionally and in a quiet place. Be on time, engaged, and ask questions to the recruiters. Then, make sure to follow up after the event by applying to open jobs or internships.

#BreakThru Hour

#BreakThru Hour is back! This first hour of Career Expo will create a space for our Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) student population at the University of Miami to connect with employers who value and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The event is taking place from 12:00-1:00 PM on Wednesday, February 24th, immediately before the rest of our Career Expo sessions. BIPOC students should register for the event here, and check out the full list of companies that will be in attendance.

Ravneet Saran is a junior studying Healthcare Management and Policy, from Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Outside of her work at Toppel, Ravneet is involved with the UNICEF organization on campus, and will soon be the president of the Punjabi Student Association. She is looking forward to meeting new people this semester - even if it's through zoom. Best Advice?

You only live once. Because of that, you should take every opportunity that comes your way because you will always learn something new.

#BreakThru Story?

One barrier I had to break through was my apprehension of trying something new, and because I was able to break through, I now am a Peer Advisor at Toppel. I could not be happier with my decision!
