#BreakThru

Meet Chamanta Prud-Homme! Chamanta is a sophomore majoring in Political Science, and she recently received funds through the Sebastian's Closet Fund at Toppel to purchase professional attire. Chamanta says that interviewing without the proper outfit has made her less confident the past, and that she feels more comfortable interviewing now.

Some advice from Chamanta: Please apply in the future for Sebastian’s Closet! The funds are available to students in order to assist us, and it’s a really great opportunity.

In addition to the Sebastian’s Closet Fund, the discount code from the JCPenney Suit-Up Event is still active (no application necessary)! Register here on Handshake to receive the code, and check out JCPenney for more information about the great items you can get at a discounted rate.

Landing Your Next Job Through Social Media

Have you already tried the traditional application process for your job search? How about using social media? In this "No Application Necessary" article, two millennial entrepreneurs offer you five specific steps for landing your dream job in 2021:

  1. Develop an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) friendly resume
  2. Utilize LinkedIn search functions
  3. Send a personalized invitation to connect
  4. Make the “ask” over a coffee chat
  5. Check-in and stay connected

As part of UM’s continued celebration of the Peace Corps’ 60th Anniversary, the Master of Arts in International Administration (MAIA) program invites you to attend a special conversation featuring returned volunteers Dr. Donna Shalala and Carol Bellamy. The Reflections on the Peace Corps Event will take place virtually on Wednesday, April 21 at 6:30 PM.

Donna Shalala, Ph.D. was among the Peace Corps first volunteers, serving in Iran where she was part of a group that helped to construct an agricultural college. Since then, her prolific career includes appointments as Secretary of Health & Human Service during the Clinton Administration, representing Florida’s 27th Congressional District in the U.S House of Representatives, and serving as President of the University of Miami from 2001-2015.

Carol Bellamy, J.D., a frequent contributor to the MAIA program, is a returned Peace Corps volunteer from Guatemala who went on to serve as director of the Peace Corps from 1993-1995. In addition, Ms. Bellamy was executive director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) from 1995-2005 and chair of the board of directors of the Fair Labor Association. She currently serves as chair of the board of the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF).

Best Advice?

You are only able to help someone if you are taking care of yourself. In order to be helpful and be there for someone it is important to do the same for yourself.

#BreakThru Story?

I have had to #Breakthru perceived barriers due to my mindset. When things get difficult, it sometimes is easy to start to doubt my abilities. However, by affirming that I can and will achieve what I set my mind to, I have been able to accomplish things I would have never imagined in and outside of my career field.
