#BreakThru

Meet Jessica Rubanich! Jessica is a senior majoring in Biomedical Engineering. This past summer, she completed a virtual internship with Medtronic in their Research and Development Department. There, she helped to design the next generation glucose-sensing technology for patients with Diabetes.

Jessica has participated in Toppel’s Professional Development Academy where she learned transferrable skills in networking with professionals, crafting a strong resume, and developing a personal brand. She says these skills helped her to secure her internship opportunity. Jessica had to #BreakThru the crowded field of applicants, and staying persistent without being discouraged helped her to succeed.

Some advice from Jessica: “Put yourself out there. Often, the best opportunities emerge when you step out of your comfort zone.”

Career Expo Is Here!!

It’s time for the Fall Career Expo!! Are you looking for a job or internship? Make sure you’ve registered on Handshake and check out the full list of employers attending. The event is taking place virtually this semester, on Wednesday, September 30th from 1:00-5:00 PM. Employers will host group sessions, which last 30 minutes each and can be attended by multiple students, and 1-on-1 sessions with recruiters in time slots of 10 minutes. Sign up for these sessions in advance so you don’t miss out on a chance to talk to your ideal employers.

Make a list of the employers you want to speak with, and do some research about their products/services. Generate a few questions that you have, brush up on your elevator pitch, spruce up your resume, and think about how you can maximize your time with each employer.

Virtual Career Fair Tips

With Fall Career Expo taking place virtually this year, it’s even more important to be prepared and to have a plan going in. In advance, make sure you update your Handshake profile with your current resume and interests (employers will be using this to learn more about you). Do some background research on the employers who are attending, and prepare a short "Elevator Pitch" to sell yourself and your qualifications.

During the event, make sure you are dressed professionally and in a quiet place. Be on time, engaged, and ask questions to the recruiters. Then, make sure to follow up after the event by applying to open jobs or internships. You can check out this article for a more complete list of tips for attending a virtual career fair.

To that end, the team has developed a short survey for current students, alumni, faculty, staff, and employers in the hopes of gaining some insight that will help further the Cane Commitment endeavor.

Take the short survey here and share your experiences!

Best Advice?

You are only able to help someone if you are taking care of yourself. In order to be helpful and be there for someone it is important to do the same for yourself.

#BreakThru Story?

I have had to #Breakthru perceived barriers due to my mindset. When things get difficult, it sometimes is easy to start to doubt my abilities. However, by affirming that I can and will achieve what I set my mind to, I have been able to accomplish things I would have never imagined in and outside of my career field.
