#BreakThru

Meet Skylar Prinz von Anhalt! Skylar is a senior majoring in Entrepreneurship in the Miami Herbert Business School. He has taken advantage of Toppel’s resume review services, interview preparation, and shadowing opportunities to advance his career. Skylar spent this past summer as a Procter & Gamble intern on the sales team, where he was able to lead, assist, and create projects – including as an outside sales representative for pharmacies in East Germany. Skylar had to #BreakThru a lack of understanding about what he wanted to do professionally, and he says self-reflection and knowing his worth were the keys to growth.

Some advice from Skylar: "Do not be afraid to ask for help. Just be forward-thinking and try to find and utilize the resources that we have at UM."

How Can You Respond To Recruiters?

One benefit of having an up-to-date profile on Handshake is that recruiters can message you directly if they feel you would be a good fit for them. Most of the time, these will be invitations to RSVP for an upcoming event. Before responding, take a look at the company’s page in Handshake and do a little bit of research. Within 1-2 days, you should be ready to respond and start by thanking them for reaching out to you. Then, be honest about your interest in the session or position. Take action if necessary, and be sure to follow up.

Diversity & Inclusivity In The Workplace

When searching for potential employers, you want to find a company that values diversity and inclusivity – but how can you be sure that the culture matches the messaging? You should start researching before your interview process begins. Sites like Glassdoor offer an inside look at how a company operates from the perspective of the employees. During the interview, it’s okay to ask questions about diversity and find examples of diverse individuals succeeding.

  3. Consider your social media presence
