#BreakThru

Meet Santiago Gama Ulloa! Santaigo is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a focus on cryptography and security. Using Toppel resources to polish his resume and practice interviewing, Santiago was able to secure an internship as a software engineer with Benhart Solutions Corp. in Pembroke Pines. He says that he had to #BreakThru losing two internship opportunities because of the coronavirus pandemic, and that staying true to himself and his goals was the key to his success.

Some advice from Santiago: If you lost an internship or job opportunity, it's ok to feel down, but in the long run it's for the best. There are more opportunities waiting and people that are willing to invest in you and your potential – you just have to keep working.

Representatives from each of the companies will present and then take questions from students – so make sure you come prepared! The event will take place virtually on Tuesday, November 10th from 6:30 – 8:45 PM. Space is limited, so be sure to register here by tonight at midnight.

Attracting Recruiters on Handshake

Updating your Handshake profile is the best way for recruiters to connect with you – but what are the most important things you can do to be noticed? When adding information to your profile, be sure to indicate what job type you are searching for. Full-time or part-time? Job or internship? Also indicate where you want to work so that recruiters can see if you match their area. Finally, update the roles you are looking for to get better recommendations. 80% of students who fill out all three sections will get messaged by recruiters, and you can always change your interests at any time!!

Overcoming Bias in the Workplace

You often hear about professionalism in the workplace, and what is and is not considered appropriate. These standards often vary by industry, but what you may not realize is that “professionalism” can often become coded language for white favoritism in workplace practices. These can privilege the values of white and Western employees and leave behind people of color.

This article details the history of white “professionalism” in the workplace, and describes steps you can take to help create a fair and equitable work environment for all.

You can reserve study rooms at Toppel for individual study use, either in the morning (9:00 AM - noon) or the afternoon (1:30 PM - 4:30 PM). There is a maximum of one appointment per day, and bookings can be made here up to seven days in advance.

Best Advice?

Hesitation leads to devastation. Although this sounds corny because it rhymes, it is important to me because it reminds me to do everything with my full attention, go full force and have a positive mindset.

#BreakThru Story?

A barrier I've had to #BreakThru when reaching toward my career goals is being comfortable talking in social situations. I have always been introverted when I first meet someone and in groups tend to just sit quietly and listen. By working on my communication skills, I have been able to speak up to ask questions and include my own thoughts about the things I want to do career-wise, which has lead me to learn more about what exactly I want to do with my majors.
