#BreakThru

Mercy Perez graduated from UM this past spring, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She had to #BreakThru many obstacles in her career path caused by the coronavirus pandemic, including an inability to pursue her nursing license directly after graduation. After studying through the summer and passing her test, Mercy is now set to begin a new role at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, as a NICU nurse.

Some advice from Mercy: “Make sure you have a great support system around you. Whether it be friends or family, it is always nice to know that there’s people cheering you on, especially when times are tough or when finals roll around.”

Best Advice?

When I attended Harambee as an incoming freshman, Dean Holmes told us that "the only way to eat is to open your mouth.” In other words, upward mobility is most achievable when you're willing to take advantage of the opportunities presented to you.

#BreakThru Story?

This past summer, I was supposed to spend two months at the University of Houston's Pre-Law Undergraduate Scholars (PLUS) Program, which would have included introductory law classes and an internship in my legal field of interest. Originally, the program was cancelled, but the LSAC created an online version of the program with all the same benefits. I spent my summer virtually participating in the PLUS program at the University of Oregon where I was able to network with attorneys, judges, current and prospective law students, as well as advance my legal writing skills and heighten my understanding of the legal profession.
