#GoalDiggin

Meet Mikayla Quigley! Mikayla is a junior double-majoring in Marine Science and Biology with a minor in Microbiology and Immunology. This summer, she was #GoalDiggin as an American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow (SURF) at the University of Florida. She was a research assistant in Dr. Kopinke's lab in the Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics department.

She shares, “What I loved most about the program was that I was given my own research project on skeletal muscle tissue regeneration to conduct from start to finish, and I was able to experience what the day-to-day life as a PhD student is like. I had the opportunity to hear a closing doctoral dissertation from a PhD student and meet with principal investigators in other laboratories. I am so grateful to have had such an incredible opportunity to learn and conduct biomedical research at one of the top pharmacology programs in the country.”

Mikayla used Toppel's sample resumes to fine-tune her application and maximize her chances for success. She also went to career fairs to explore different career paths she could follow within the field of biomedical science.

Some advice from Mikayla: “Seize every opportunity you can. If you have an interest in something, invest some time and effort into learning more about it and developing skills in that area.”

Why it's Worth Listening to People you Disagree With

With the start of a new academic year, you may find yourself engaging with people that are outside of your usual or with people who think drastically different than those in your home community. This could happen anywhere, such as in your new classes, in a professional setting, at a career fair, or anywhere else on campus. It’s important to embrace your values, but it’s equally as important to be open-minded in order to understand the viewpoints of others.

Watch this TED Talk as Zachary R. Wood shares why it’s worth listening to people you disagree with.
