#GoalDiggin

Meet Adam Strubeck! Adam graduated from the U in 2018 and is now working with the Peace Corps in Senegal as an Agroforestry volunteer within the environmental sector.

He shares, “I started at the U as a Marine Biology major. I realized lab work was not for me so I switched to Ecosystem Science and made Economics my second major. After doing a summer internship in the Dominican Republic, I knew I wanted to continue working internationally. A career advisor at Toppel encouraged me to check out the Peace Corps, as she had been a volunteer herself. I applied to go anywhere before being chosen for Senegal. My favorite part is getting to experience the culture of a nation so different than our own. I live with the village chief in a small rural village of 500 people. Adjusting to their way of life has brought me great satisfaction, even though it can be difficult at times.”

Some advice from Adam: “Keep your mind open to all the activities out there. Some students feel like the path in front of them is set in stone from the time they declare a major. Keep your options open and take advantage of the career center.”

Adam runs a blog about his experience volunteering abroad! Check it out here.

What Will Future Jobs Look Like?

Economist Andrew McAfee suggests that, yes, probably, droids will take our jobs -- or at least the kinds of jobs we know now.

In this far-seeing TED talk, he thinks through what future jobs might look like, and how to educate coming generations to hold them.

Jennifer Faria

Assistant Director Business Consultant

In college at UVA, I was a quiet and studious student and used my small-town southern charm to navigate the large lecture halls and manicured green lawns and make friends with my fellow Wahoos. I was also highly active on campus, teaching swimming lessons, playing intramural co-ed soccer and club water polo, and working for the campus smoothie bar. In business school, I studied accounting and marketing but soon decided to follow the numbers route after an internship in the accounting department one summer at my local hospital. I graduated with honors and a full-time offer in audit from PricewaterhouseCoopers. After a summer of selling wicked wraps in Newport, RI, my post-graduation professional journey began in Washington D.C. working with high-tech and entertainment clients. One piece of advice that I wish I had received while in school would be, “it’s not all about grades but also about the experiences.”
