#GoalDiggin

Meet Randy Fitzgerald, a junior quad-majoring in the College of Arts and Sciences in History, Political Science, Economics, and International Studies, with a minor in Latin American Studies. Randy was part of the Summer 2019 class of the White House Internship Program.

The Program has a long-standing legacy of being a prestigious, nonpartisan internship program for young people with a passion and aptitude for public service. As an intern in the Office of Presidential Correspondence at the White House, "I assisted with the aggregation of the many diverse inputs and perspectives from constituents being shared with the President. We worked regularly to compile daily data and presented findings in daily and weekly memoranda circulated to our supervisors. Getting to see the Rose Garden, the Oval Office, and the West Wing was also an incredible part of the program, and walking by televised interviews being given by high-profile officials was a normal part of the work day. Being a White House Intern was truly a surreal feeling. I never lost my sense of shock every morning as I walked through the gates to the White House complex!"

Some advice from Randy: "Aim high, and when in doubt, apply! Whether or not you think you may get the specific job or internship you're seeking, put your best foot forward, don't hesitate to reach out to trusted friends or advisors for help, and go for it!"

7 Perfect Replies to Politely Shut Down Negative People

At some point in your professional (or personal) life, you're bound to encounter negative people. You might even be one of them and not realize it! Venting is normal, and in moderation, can be healthy. However, for negative people, venting and complaining are often a constant state. If you choose to hear someone out, it's important to be able to shift the conversation towards a positive direction afterwards. Check out this article from The Muse and learn how to redirect negative conversation in the office and for some tips on how to handle these tricky situations. If you notice people using these tips on you, that's a good indication that it's time to reflect on the kind of person you want to be.

Evan Eggers

Graduate Assistant Communication

My undergraduate experience taught me a lot about who I want to be, and what I need to achieve that goal. I would suggest that every student take advantage of an opportunity that may only be tangentially related to their career path. Even if that opportunity doesn't lead to a new passion, it will still provide a glimpse into what others you may work with are experiencing, making it easier for you to foster a professional relationship with them. I did this as a junior when I took an internship at the local sports arena. I discovered a passion for live events that I hadn't tapped into, simply because I was focusing on becoming an artist manager. Working as an intern at the Stockton Arena helped me develop new skills, and allowed me to apply my skills and knowledge from my artist management path to a new role.
