#GoalDiggin

Sydney Boyd is a senior studying Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in biomaterials and tissue. Sydney shares how she’s been #GoalDiggin by participating in the Professional Development Academy!

“Thanks to PDAcademy, I actually just accepted a full-time position with my dream company, Medtronic, last week! I applied to the STEM PDAcademy originally because I was looking for more experience in professionalism and help with interviews. During the PDAcademy, there were multiple panels with STEM professionals. These panels not only gave me a deeper insight to the industry, but also gave me the opportunity to ask questions and gain contacts. One of these contacts opened up a door to an internship opportunity with a large biomedical device company. I was able to use my interview practice from PDAcademy through the multiple rounds of the interview process, and ended up landing the internship. The internship was absolutely wonderful, and I recently just accepted a full-time offer to work with the company post-graduation. PDAcademy gave me the professional tools to succeed and opened up numerous doors for contacts in industry.”

Magic Words to Use During an Interview

Towards the end of an interview, an employer will often ask if you have any questions of your own to ask. Although it can be difficult to always know what to say during an interview process, there are five phrases that can be utilized in every interview situation to set you apart, show your gratitude, and create a bond with the interviewer.

Check out this article from Vault to see what those phrases are.

I was the first person in my immediate family to go away for college. I often struggled with time management and balancing my work and student involvement opportunities. I also struggled with finding other people like me: being first-generation, Latinx, LGBT+. Luckily, I learned to ask for help from campus administrators and I began to develop myself as a stronger student leader. I was involved in several areas of campus. My involvement and scholarship influenced me in wanting to help other college students navigate their experience. Eventually, I pursued my master’s degree in college student affairs. If I was able to give my undergrad self some advice, what I would say is try not to doubt yourself. You earned your spot, don’t let anyone ever try and devalue what you bring to your university. Each of our paths are unique and messy, so don’t compare your success with others around you.
