#BossedUp

Meet Kendall Kilberger! Kendall is a junior majoring in Mathematics and Spanish and minoring in Biology, Psychology, and Philosophy. She will be graduating early in December.

Last summer, Kendall interned for a civil rights firm, Gregory E. Kulis and Associates, in downtown Chicago. “I took on a variety of integrated roles, such as a receptionist, organization specialist, and was a legal assistant for a variety of cases. I did intense research involving police brutality and prison riots and I went to state and federal court almost every single day to sit in on a variety of depositions, which was amazing! After I finished my internship, they invited me to come back over winter break and sit in on the depositions for a case that was my primary focus over summer. It was so rewarding seeing all of my hard work come full circle and seeing my boss use my research as the basis of his questioning!”

Kendall says that being the President of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), an academic society on campus, also helped her become career ready. She shares, “I joined the club when it was very inactive and decided to rebuild the organization into the prestigious, well-known club it deserved to be on campus. With my role as President, I have learned a variety of vital skills that will carry me into my career, such as the power of delegation and how to network with other clubs and professionals.”

Some advice from Kendall: “Don’t over-extend yourself. Often times, students jump at any opportunity that can be listed on their resume. However, employers are not looking for quantity, they are looking for quality. Employers love leadership experience, and you do not gain that if you are over-involved!”

Surprising Habits of Original Thinkers

Would you like to learn how to make your creative side stand out to employers? One way to do this is during an interview! Employers are impressed when interviewees mention that they’re creative problem solvers. These individuals are able to think out-of-the-box during pressing situations and put ideas into action.

In this Ted Talk, Organizational Psychologist, Adam Grant, studies people whom he calls “Originals” and some of their unexpected habits. He describes them to be “thinkers who dream up new ideas and take action to put them into the world.” Check it out!

Samantha Vega

Assistant Director Campus Talent

In college, I made a lot of mistakes. I was unsure of my path in life and really took a lot of risks regarding my professional and academic life. Despite my uncertainty with my career and professional life, I was highly involved on my college campus. I volunteered to assist the Veterans Center with academic and financial advising for Veterans transitioning from Military to Civilian life. I was also involved with the Veteran’s Student Association, Runway (fashion show club), and the Student Center. I was a building manager for my entire collegiate career and was involved with orientation for 3 years. My proudest moment in my life was graduating with my master's and furthering my education. If I could give advice to my younger self, it would be to tune into my talents earlier.
