#BossedUp

Meet Haley Plaas! Haley is a senior double-majoring in Marine Science and Biology and has minors in Chemistry and Motion Pictures. Her past internships and continuous research at UM RSMAS helped her get #BossedUp. She is also a co-founder of a recent initiative to reduce plastics, Drive Away Waste.

Haley interned with Cape Ann Whale Watch the summer after her freshman year, where she worked as a naturalist, recorded whale behavior, and taught ecotourists on the boat about whales and human impacts on oceanic environments. She also interned with Mote Marine Laboratories as a research assistant where she studied Red Tide blooms and other harmful algal blooms in the state of Florida. She says this is where she found her long-term research interest in water quality and aquatic toxicant transport.

Her work in three diverse laboratories at RSMAS has also helped her become career ready. “Being in the lab helped me gain several important research skills and improved my confidence to conduct experiments. Being around the PhD students helped me prepare for the next step, which is pursuing my own PhD in Environmental Science and Engineering at UNC-CH. I now am studying Cyanobacterial HABs in the labs of Dr. Larry Brand and Dr. Kimberly Popendorf, where I am completing a senior thesis experiment so I can graduate with honors in May.”

Some advice from Haley: “GET INVOLVED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! My GPA and test scores are extremely average, but my involvement in a diverse range of activities and experiences are what have gotten the attention of job offers and graduate programs.”

Ismaris Ocasio

Assistant Director Graduate Student Programs

I call myself the self-discoverer who uses my passions to truly get to know myself and those around me. I am really into astrology, interior design, aesthetics, and the beach for relaxation. I aspire to take care of myself holistically so I can live a life that is fulfilling in all areas. My interests in self-exploration and liberation are also reflective of my passion for intersectional social justice issues as I aspire to work with others to create environments that are more inclusive, connected, and socially conscious.

I attended Bridgewater State University for undergrad where I was extremely involved. My time consisted of being a full-time student, being a Resident Assistant, being a mentor to high school students, co-hosting “The Art of Hip-Hop” radio show, leading alternative break trips, attending study abroad tours, and serving as the programming chair for Bridgewater Coffeehouse Entertainment. My undergraduate experiences truly shaped who I am today and I`m incredibly grateful for the pearls I gained.
