#BossedUp

Meet Breana Ross! Breana is a senior double-majoring in Broadcast Journalism and Political Science with an Africana Studies minor.

Breana interned with the National Basketball Association in their Content Department, more specifically under PSAs and Promos. She says she did a lot of research and pitched player stories for NBA Cares PSAs. She also produced and edited a sizzle video recapping the 2017-2018 NBA season. Additionally, she assisted with the NBA Draft, the Rookie Photoshoot, and had an opportunity to meet a few players and all of the executives of the NBA.

She says, “Toppel has helped me become career ready by providing me with exposure and connections. I have been on two of Toppel's "Career Crawls," one in London and one in D.C. Both of these experiences exposed me to industries and careers that I had never thought of. Toppel has also provided valuable connections that have helped me score internships. If the NBA had never come to Toppel, I don't believe I would have gotten the internship.”

Some advice from Breana: “Never stop making connections and exploring other career paths. You never know where life may take you!”

Application Deadline: February 5, 2019

The Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program is a six-week program at Howard University that helps prepare undergraduate students for careers in international affairs.

Students will learn about different career paths, both inside and outside of government, with an emphasis on careers in the U.S. Department of State. They will hone professional skills needed to be competitive for and succeed in careers of international service. It includes two for-credit academic courses, a professional writing seminar, visits and meetings with foreign affairs professionals in a wide range of government and non-governmental organizations, and professional development activities.

It pays for tuition, room, board, transportation, and provides a stipend. The program will run from mid-June until late July.

Applications are due by February 5th. Click here to apply.

Carly Smith

Associate Director Career Readiness

“I like to call myself a forever learner. Growing up, I always loved going to school, both for the classes and for the friendships. It is really not a surprise thinking about it that I now work in education. Apart from learning, I have a passion for trying to live a healthy, happy, and holistic life. One of my major goals is to live as peaceful and joyful of a life as possible, and to help others achieve the same.

College was an exciting time for me. I took a major risk by attending a university in which I knew the academics would challenge me more than I had been challenged before. I also went across the country, not knowing a soul. It was in college that I truly gained confidence in myself and started to find my voice, speaking up for issues that I cared about. As a northerner my whole life, it was in this time that I gained a new appreciation for all things South: country music, cowboy boots, and delicious shrimp and grits. My best advice to current college students is: Work smarter, not harder."
