#BossedUp

Angelica Duque is a senior majoring in Political Science with minors in International Studies and Latin American Studies.

She’s had a total of eight internships! She shares that her last three have been the most notable -- legislative intern for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (through the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute), policy research intern in Argentina's Ministry of the Interior, and now, legislative intern for a Florida Member in the U.S. House of Representatives. She has also held various leadership positions within the College Democrats, including chapter president and national Hispanic Caucus chair.

Angelica says: “In the short time that I have been interning, I have registered many constituent calls, written summaries and memoranda for staffers, fulfilled tour requests, and managed the front office. My two congressional internships have largely been similar, but in my current position, I have more liberty to attend briefings and hearings, and write memoranda and letters for staffers."

"Toppel has helped me refine my resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile so that they stand out in applications." She also took advantage of practice interviews.

Some advice from Angelica: “Network, network, network. Start out with the connections you have and build relationships with them. I value my student mentors just as much as career professionals”

Use Handshake to Conduct Company Research

Before the Career Expo this week, make sure you register on Handshake, take a look at the list of companies attending, and conduct research on the ones you’re interested in.

Why do your research? Demonstrating knowledge about each company or recruiter you're talking to will make you stand out from the crowd and show the recruiter that you’re ready to be hired! Do your research by checking out the company's website, mission, open positions, and general information. Be prepared to talk to recruiters about how your skills, experiences, and career goals are a good fit with their company.

Also make sure to have some questions ready for company representatives that show your knowledge of their organization. Employers are not only looking for the most skilled candidate for the job – they are also looking for candidates who are genuinely interested in their company. The more you engage them, the better the impression you'll make.

Doug Neese

Assistant Director Campus Outreach

I attended Florida International University where I received a Bachelor's degree in International Relations and Political Science. When I first began college, I thought that I wanted to join the Army but after doing ROTC for a year I realized it wasn’t for me. Instead I decided that I wanted to join the Peace Corps and was consistently making moves to do that. I was and still am very passionate about international affairs and politics so I joined clubs and cultivated friendships with people who had similar interests. I made sure that during my college years I traveled around the United States as much as I could even though I didn’t have that much money. I managed to organize a lot of road trips with friends from my university and had amazing times!
