Peer-to-Peer Advising

Monday-Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm

There’s no appointment necessary with Toppel’s Drop-in Advising! Come into Toppel for advising any time throughout the day and stay as long as you need.

You’ll be able to meet with one of our highly trained advisors for support and guidance individually or in a small group of your peers during our drop-in advising hours. Receive hands-on help on your schedule, have extended conversations about how to navigate your career options and identify your professional brand, update and refine your resume, or simply come in to ask any questions you may have.

Showcase Your Work on Handshake!

This summer, you likely have done some fantastic work to advance yourself in your field. Let employers know what you’ve been up to! By uploading your summer projects to Handshake, you can show employers your value and skill set in a way that is difficult to portray on your resume.

To upload a project, log into Handshake, click your name in the top right corner, select “My Profile” from the drop-down menu, and at the bottom of the page click the plus sign on the “Projects” box.

The Benefits of Volunteering

Volunteering has some natural and fairly obvious benefits, such as adding weight and experience to your CV/resume, but it also has numerous personal benefits. Finding the right volunteer opportunity can give you purpose and drive, provide knowledge and new skills, ignite a new passion, connect you with highly interesting and potentially influential individuals, and keep you mentally stimulated. You can better both your professional self and your personal self.

There’s a volunteer role out there for everyone. Whether it’s working within a charity, lending your skills and knowledge to fulfill a need, or helping your community, volunteering allows you to give something back. Check out this TED Talk given by Tuan Nguyen where he shares his personal stories to demonstrate how volunteerism is the best platform for professional and personal growth.

Want to meet professionals who have your dream job? Interested in exploring different industries and careers? If so, apply to the Toppel Career Center’s UShadow Program through our new Cane2Cane platform. Students accepted into the UShadow Program are matched with a UM alum or employer for a one-day shadowing experience. This is a great way to gain knowledge about different career fields and see a true day-in-the-life in an industry you may be considering.

You must be a Sophomore or Junior to apply. Contact carly@miami.edu with any questions.

Executive Director Employer Engagement

I am a proud native Floridian! I love spending time with my family and friends. Having the opportunity to travel is exciting, and I enjoy visiting new places. My job gives me energy, as I love helping students achieve their career goals. In college, I was shy when meeting new people. I loved my job in UF Housing and chose my career path based on that experience. I also had a lot of fun singing in the University Choir! My proudest moment was the day I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. If I could give advice to my younger self, it would be “don’t be afraid to take risks.”
