#BossedUp

Caitlin Smith is a 5th year student in the 5-year architecture program. She is pursuing dual degrees; a B.Arch in Architecture and a B.S. in Mathematics on the Applied Analysis track with a minor in Urban Studies. Caitlin has had multiple internships that have all helped her get #BossedUp in her career.

She first interned with Dover, Kohl & Partners in 2016 when she was in her third year of architecture school. Being a first-time intern, she was initially nervous but felt welcomed by the employees at the firm.

During the summer of 2017, she interned at Warehaus, an interdisciplinary firm. “While at Warehaus, I was able to work on a wide variety of projects and get construction site experience. Warehaus taught me many technical and administrative skills regarding how architecture projects are typically organized and managed. My time at Warehaus was invaluable, and it cemented my passion for and understanding of the industry.”

This past summer she worked at TortiGallas+Partners where she was able to learn about managing a large team located in different parts of the country. “During my time there, I was able to learn about in-house management, such as preparing a project schedule, how project fees are typically generated, and determining staff and personnel needed for specific projects.”

Caitlin says that attending Toppel’s Architecture Career Fair has enhanced her career-readiness. “There are many firms interested in hiring UM students, and I have always been able to use the career fair as a networking opportunity as well as a springboard for potential internships and future collaborations.”

Ways to Reduce Workplace Violence

There are about 33% of people who struggle with workplace violence, specifically sexual assault or harassment. Knowing the warning signs and how to help someone who may be struggling with this form of violence could reduce the chance of interpersonal violence from occurring. Steps you can take to reduce violence include:

Communication: When you hear something that could seem off-putting, you can speak with that person and let them know how their language could be harmful. You can also be supportive of someone who may disclose something they may have experienced and help them navigate the resources in your department.

Support: Know your resources and how to contact them! Here are some resources at UM and nationally:
o Sexual Assault Resource Team or (305) 786-6666
o On-campus Religious Organization
o Counseling Center
o RAINN or (800) 656- 4673

Prevention and Education: Find out about interactive presentations or resources you can hand out. The more education we have on how to prevent violence will encourage a community of care and safety.

Canes, let’s support those who may have been affected by sexual assault or violence by wearing denim on April 24th. Learn more about Denim Day here.

Kelshay Toomer

Coordinator, Internships

A Seminole at heart, I graduated from Florida State University in Spring 2016 with a Bachelor's in English and a minor in Communications. Determined to finish in exactly four years, I did not allow my social life to trump my academics. The one thing that kept me focused was imaging myself walk across the stage at graduation. When I first started college, I stayed within my comfort zone because it aided as a safe place for me while I attended a Predominately White Institution. Wanting to find a sense of belonging, I joined The Black Student Union, S.I.S.T.U.H.S and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority where I developed life-long friendships. Wise words from a Seminole -- visit the Career Center to help you better prepare for your life after college!
