#BossedUp

Meet J.T. Urraro! J.T. is a senior studying Economics, Management, and Entrepreneurship.

J.T. #BossedUp this summer as an intern at Northwestern Mutual in New York. During his internship he learned what a full-time career as a Financial Advisor would be like and was given the chance to work closely with senior representatives, learning about their approach to the business and about strategic financial planning. Based on his performance, he was offered an extension of the internship throughout the fall and an opportunity to work full-time at Northwestern Mutual post-graduation in December!

Some advice from J.T.: “If you surround yourself with the right people and never stop making influential connections, success will be more than achievable. Don’t be afraid to reach outside your comfort zone and take risks! Find something you’re passionate about, and give it everything you’ve got, no excuses. The road to success starts right here right now at the University of Miami, all you have to do is take the first step.”

Mastering the Virtual Interview

With EPIC and the Fall Career Expo around the corner, interview season is coming up! Some employers may choose to interview in their offices or on campus. However, many companies are embracing technology and are setting up virtual video interviews for their candidates. Video interviewing is convenient for those employers who are located in offices all over the country or across the globe.

This article shares helpful tips for video interviewing such as planning ahead, appearance, and other advice to take into account during the actual interview.

Be on the Lookout for Virtual Information Sessions

When logging into the Handshake Events section, you’ll notice there are many more “Virtual Information Session” opportunities. These programs will offer you the convenience and ability to login on your own personal device in any location. Employers use virtual sessions to reach students from multiple universities as once. Some of the upcoming sessions include, “What is it like to Work at Box,” “The IBM Vault,” “McKinsey Digital Labs,” and McKinsey Digital Analytics.” These sessions will give you a first-hand look at specific company cultures and provide guidance on how to secure an internship or full-time opportunities with great organizations.

***Make sure to review the full event description! Many of the sessions require you to register on an online platform outside of Handshake in order to receive the video link.***

Director, Employer Engagement

"In college, I was shy when meeting new people. I loved my job in UF Housing and chose my career path based on that experience. I also had a lot of fun singing in the University Choir! My proudest moment was the day I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. If I could give advice to my younger self, it would be “don’t be afraid to take risks.”
