#BossedUp

Meet German! German is a senior studying Aerospace Engineering.

He #BossedUp by conducting company research and putting himself out there! Last summer he interned at Rocket Lab USA in Huntington Beach, CA. German found this internship by cold calling one of the directors and by keeping up with the company both before and after their first successful orbital launch in January.

Some words from German: “Working at Rocket Lab has introduced me to and taught me heaps of technical knowledge on the manufacture and design ethos behind orbital class bi-propellant vehicles, but just as importantly, it’s been a powerful move for my career. Wherever I go forward, I can assuredly say it started here -- throwing up the U in front of the premier launch-provider for the smallsat (small satellite) industry, and the coolest company around.”

Start Researching Companies before Career Expo!

Before the Career Expo, make sure you register on Handshake, take a look at the list of companies attending, and conduct research on the ones you’re interested in.

Why do your research? Demonstrating knowledge about each company or recruiter you're talking to will make you stand out from the crowd and show the recruiter that you’re ready to be hired! Do your research by checking out the company's website, mission, open positions, and general information. Be prepared to talk to recruiters about how your skills, experiences, and career goals are a good fit with their company.

Also make sure to have some questions ready for company representatives that show your knowledge of their organization. Employers are not only looking for the most skilled candidate for the job – they are also looking for candidates who are genuinely interested in their company. The more you engage them, the better the impression you'll make.

Peer Advisor

“I am a junior double majoring in Anthropology and Political Science. In addition to my role as a Peer Advisor at the Toppel Career Center I am also a member of the Academic Honor Council, the pre-law fraternity Phi Alpha Delta, and Project Unchained. I also help with the Community Outreach of the on-campus ministry United Wesley. Off campus, I love bouldering, practicing my embroidery, and spending time with my friends and family. A quote that I’ve been living by recently is “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” from The Shining. It reminds me to take time off from work and school and focus on loving others and myself better.”
