#BossedUp

Meet UM Alumna Ana Maria Hoyos! After graduating from the U, Ana Maria found a way to pursue her passion for business and management while connecting back to her roots by working for a global company.

Ana was one of the 2,600 international students who come to UM every year to pursue degrees and expand their academic experience. She struggled with the decision of whether to stay in the U.S. after graduation or to return to Bogota. “I wanted to stay in the U.S. since I had started a life here, but I also wanted to find a way to connect back to my roots and use my language skills to my benefit,” she said. “Ultimately, I got very lucky by finding a global company to work for.” She hopes her story can help students and young alumni who are still debating their path.

Check out this article to see how her UM education contributed to her success at Meltwater, where she now serves as the Area Sales Director for Latin America.

Why the Secret to Success is Setting the Right Goals

We’re constantly setting goals for ourselves, identifying things we hope to accomplish. How can we make sure we’re staying on track with our goals? How do we know we’re not heading toward the wrong objectives?

The secret is knowing how to set the right goals. You may have heard of SMART goals, but in this Ted Talk, venture capitalist Jon Doerr takes it even further by sharing his thoughts on OKRs — a goal-setting system based on Objectives and Key Results. It works by defining what it is you want to accomplish and how you’re going to get it done. Watch this Ted Talk to learn about OKRs and how setting the right goals can make all the difference!

Share your Handshake Profile!

If you haven’t done so already, take a few minutes to add details to your profile about your work experience, activities, educational background, and skills. Once your profile looks great, you can make your profile public to employers so that they can find you for positions for which you might be a strong candidate.

You can also make your profile public to other UM students and check out profiles from classmates who have opted to share theirs. This is great way to see which students have already done an internship that you’re interested in and to connect with them for advice!

Anna Kenney

Assistant Director, Internships

“During college, I was definitely not as involved as I should have been (or could have been). I completed my undergraduate degree at Florida State University and studied International Affairs. I participated in a cultural exchange program while at FSU and was able to spend 3 weeks in Dresden Germany. That experience taught me so much about myself and spurred my love for travel. I still keep in touch with some of the German students I met over 10 years later! During my undergrad, I worked as a Student Assistant in the Residence Life Office. It was in this role where I realized that working at a college and with college students was even an option. I completed my graduate degree at the University of Dayton and studied College Student Personnel. After living in the snow for the only two years of my life, I came back to Florida.

The piece of advice I wish I had known is that if you screw up your GPA early on in your academic career you will spend the rest of the time struggling to get it back.”
