#BossedUp

Meet UM Class of ‘09 alum, Nick Ciletti! Nick is an Emmy award-winning journalist who works at the ABC affiliate in Phoenix, AZ.

Nick’s love for knowing what was happening in the world around him, connecting with people, and telling stories led him down the path of journalism.

As a student he interned in Miami, worked on several shows at UMTV, and worked behind the scenes at a few local TV stations. From there, Nick says he sent his DVD out to “dozens...and I mean DOZENS” of TV stations, all over the US. “No one wanted to hire me. But I kept at it, and finally got my first on-air job in Yuma, AZ.”

Some advice from Nick: “Don't be afraid to start at the bottom. It might not be pretty, but it will be worth it. Don't be afraid of hearing, "No," because all it takes is one, "Yes." Believe in yourself, even when it's not easy (especially when it's not easy.) Embrace what makes you different. Celebrate it. Learn to see the value in all people you meet (you never know who your greatest teacher may be).”

Edward Cruz

Director Career Education

“When I arrived to college in the fall of 1998, I can remember feeling a sense of accomplishment that I made it! However, as the semester continued, this feeling quickly diminished. As a first-generation college student, I began to question if I belonged for a variety of reasons. However, through my perseverance and self-awareness, I quickly learned what I needed to do to become successful. During my sophomore year I became heavily involved on campus and began connecting with faculty and staff. Due to my experience as a first-generation college student, I have a passion for serving and mentoring first-gen students at the University of Miami. Outside of the office, I enjoy spending time serving my local church, capturing moments through photography, playing basketball weekly and raising an energetic and happy three-year-old boy, Benjamin, in partnership with my wife Juliana.”
