#BossedUp

Meet Sasha Baranov, a senior double majoring in Political Science and International Studies with a minor in History.

Sasha #BossedUp by securing an internship through Handshake!

“I would say Handshake and especially Toppel have been an integral part of my journey to become ready for my career as I get ready to graduate. With Handshake I have been able to market myself and all of the skills I have learned during my time at the U. Using Handshake I have been able to secure a spring legal internship with Caserta & Spiriti which shows that employers are really hiring ‘Canes!”

Some advice from Sasha: “Don’t take the resources the Toppel Career Center offers for granted. Keep your Handshake profile up-to-date and do not hesitate to go speak with an advisor for advice, resume tune ups, or just general questions! Remember to always thank the staff at Toppel any time you see them for the amazing work and advocacy they do on the behalf of students and alumni! GO CANES!”

Are you unsure of what you want to do with your major, or if that major is even for you? Choosing a college major is a big decision, but there are some things you can do to choose a major that you feel happier and more secure about. Come to this workshop and learn about how to change your mindset and embrace when shift happens.

Register for this event on Handshake.

Add Social Links to your Profile

Do you have unique skills or projects listed on platforms, such as LinkedIn, that you want recruiters to notice? Handshake has a cool feature that lets you link other social media pages right to your Handshake profile! Recruiters will then be able to easily access these other profiles to learn more about you. This is a great opportunity to showcase an online portfolio or personal website. To add a social link, go to your Handshake profile and scroll down to the "Social Links" section on the right-hand side. Click the add button and select the platform you want to link. You will then be able to enter the unique URL that leads to your desired page.

How to Make Stress your Friend

Everyone experiences stress in their life from time to time. Any change in life, positive or negative, can cause stress. However, new research from Kelly McGonigal, health psychologist and lecturer at Stanford University, shows that stress may only negatively affect your health if you believe it will.

Learn strategies for stress reduction by reframing how you view stress and making stress your friend. You can reframe by turning it from a negative into a positive and using it to build resilience and connection to others.

The Job Search for International Student series is meant to offer insight into the job search process as well as the sponsorship process. In part 1 of the series, students will learn about best practices for searching for full-time positions. ISSS will also be on hand to discuss the Optional Practical Training (OPT) Process.

During part 2, students will hear from Immigration Attorney Aaron Blumberg about applying for the H1-B working visa. Each session will last approximately 1 hour and will be open to all undergraduate and graduate students at UM.

Peer Advisor

“I am a senior majoring in Psychology, and my minor is Human & Social Development. I’ve really enjoyed my time at UM, especially attending all the football games! On campus, I’m a member of U Miami Roots and the Sunshine Club. Off campus, I like to volunteer and spend time at the beach with my friends. One piece of advice that has really helped me get through college is “Just keep swimming,” from Finding Nemo. College is obviously where you’ll have some of the best times of your life, but it can also feel stressful and overwhelming at times. This quote has reminded me to stay focused and to keep moving forward in life.”
