#BossedUp
Derek Auguste is a junior studying political science and philosophy and is a member of the Veteran Student Organization here on campus. Derek plays an integral role in Miami's veteran ecosystem as the Platoon Leader for The Mission Continues Miami 1st Service Platoon. The Mission Continues empowers veterans who are adjusting to life at home to find purpose through community impact. With nearly 80 service platoons across 40 cities, each platoon is led by a veteran and has an operational focus targeting a key challenge in the community they serve.
Here in Miami, the platoon is focusing on improving the environment in natural and open spaces. Derek recently led a group of 50 veteran and civilian volunteers on a weekend service trip in remembrance of 9/11. The group completed over 500 hours of combined service at Dry Tortugas National Park and Big Pine Key nature preserve, where they helped remove over 1,000 lbs. of hurricane debris, as well as assisting park rangers with their preparation for this year's storm season. As the most active service platoon in the country, there are a number of opportunities for fellow Canes to come out and help Derek and The Mission Continues impact our community. Getting #BossedUp and developing your career takes a lot of shapes and forms. Volunteering for a cause you love is one of them!

Fall Career Expo & Graduate Fair
Wednesday, October 3rd, 1-5pm
By attending Expo, you can gain exposure to a broad spectrum of career paths, learn about internships and full-time positions, and network with employers looking for students just like YOU. Career Expo, UM's signature recruiting event, attracts hundreds of companies from a variety of industries including business, healthcare, communication, government, non-profits, science, technology and more!
Students from all majors and class levels are encouraged to attend. It’s never too early or too late to start networking! Networking is critical for your future success. In order to be hired one day or be accepted into grad school, you need to be able to articulate your skills, strengths, knowledge, and experience. It's important to have conversations with people and grow your network, even if you're not currently looking for a job. If networking sounds difficult or intimidating, the only way to get rid of your nerves is to get experience (the more you do it, the easier it becomes) and, of course, to prepare in advance.
If you're not sure you want to attend Expo, keep in mind that you can stay for as long or as little as you'd like. Employers and grad schools are there because they want to talk to students like you! So starting up conversations isn't as challenging as it can sometimes be in cold calls or impromptu situations.

Steps to Take Before Expo
Below are some steps you can take to make sure you're Expo ready.
- Register on Handshake.
- Make sure you have a professional outfit ready to wear. Click here for info on what is considered professional attire. For some outfit inspiration check out Toppel's Pinterest Page.
- Create/revise your resume. Click here for advice and templates. You can also come to Toppel for drop-in advising to get your resume critiqued, M-F 8:30 am – 5 pm.
- Craft your elevator pitch: Don't get caught off guard by the "Tell me a little about yourself" question. Spend some time writing and practicing your 30-second pitch. Here’s a great article with tips on creating an elevator pitch.
- Take a look at the list of companies attending on Handshake and conduct research on the ones you’re interested in (e.g., on their mission, values, open positions and how you fit them). If you demonstrate knowledge about each company or manager you're talking to, you'll certainly stand out from the crowd!
- Have some questions ready for company representatives that show your knowledge of their organization. Employers are not only looking for the most skilled candidate for the job – they are also looking for candidates who are genuinely interested in their company. The more you engage them, the better the impression you'll make.
- Attend Toppel's Career Fair Prep workshop presented by Maximus on Monday Oct. 1st.
- For day of Expo: Print at least 20 copies of your resume, bring your CaneID, dress professionally, and remember to collect business cards from recruiters to follow-up after the event.

Douglas Neese
Assistant Director
Campus Outreach |
“I attended Florida International University where I received a Bachelor's degree in International Relations and Political Science. When I first began college, I thought that I wanted to join the Army but after doing ROTC for a year I realized it wasn’t for me. Instead I decided that I wanted to join the Peace Corps and was consistently making moves to do that. I was and still am very passionate about international affairs and politics so I joined clubs and cultivated friendships with people who had similar interests. I made sure that during my college years I traveled around the United States as much as I could even though I didn’t have that much money. I managed to organize a lot of road trips with friends from my university and had amazing times!”
