#BossedUp

Meet D’Andre McIntyre, a Journalism and Political Science major, Africana Studies minor and a senior at UM.

Over the summer, D’Andre interned in the office of Congressman Henry C. "Hank" Johnson, Jr. of the 4th Congressional District of Georgia through the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF). In the office, he assisted the congressman and legislative staff with drafting responses to constituents, press releases, and speeches for the congressman. In addition to that, he assisted the legislative director with the congressman's judiciary portfolio by attending hearings and briefings, conducting research on bills, and looking for potential co-sponsorships.

D’Andre says that his experience gave him a better understanding of our government and helped him confirm that he wants to go to law school after undergrad. He was also able to travel all around D.C. and visit many historical sites, along with making connections with the people in his office and other members of his program.

“Toppel has helped me become a stronger candidate in the job search. They have helped me strengthen my resume and build my confidence when interviewing. Handshake has introduced me to multiple opportunities.”

Some advice from D’Andre: “Take a chance. If you want something, go for it. Don't worry about the next person. Just run the race to the best of your ability.”

Why Some of Us Don't Have One True Calling

Have you ever asked yourself, what is my true calling? Am I in the right major? How will I connect my involvements or hobbies to my life purpose? Sometimes the answer might be more complicated than the one we desire.

We are multifaceted beings who have various passions, short- and long-term goals, and interests. It's important to focus on the different opportunities that can be available to us instead of trying to hone in on just one. By embracing our multiple interests, we can gain a new lens on how we see ourselves and our life path. Watch Emilie Wapnick's TED Talk to learn more about how the intersections of our interests can actually open more doors than when we view ourselves as one-dimensional.
