#BossedUp

Meet Symone! Symone is a senior majoring in Marketing and Management with a minor in Music Business and Entertainment Industries. She is also a student intern at Toppel!

Symone co-founded Hairology, a new organization on campus whose mission is to embrace and educate all genders, religions, and races about natural hair while defying society’s standards.

She says Hairology was created to spark conversation in an area that’s normally overlooked. “For the past few years, minorities have been in this space of reclaiming ourselves in regards to accepting our naturalness. It’s an issue that so many people are dealing with on a daily basis that’s often not discussed if it doesn’t directly affect a person.”

Symone, along with her co-founder, felt it was important for minorities to have a safe place on campus to discuss their hair, the healthiness of it, as well as the issues they face with it living in Miami. Also, it creates an educational environment for the many students on campus that may lack knowledge in this area at a predominately white institution (PWI). She hopes that Hairology makes an impact on this campus and that all students will come to be educated so that they know how to be more culturally competent, especially in the workplace.

There's a Fatal Flaw in Your Five-Year Plan

As we get closer to the end of the fall semester, it can be easy to pick on ourselves for not being as disciplined as we'd hoped: with studying, working out, meditating, etc.

This article reminds us how focusing too much on the future and perfecting our life plans can make us miss out on all of the great things that are happening today. Striving for a perfect morning or daily routine isn't always the answer, and can oftentimes make you feel even worse when you don't stick to it. Keep in mind that productivity and efficiency come from being flexible and from understanding your needs, which can shift throughout the day. A routine that worked for you one week may not work the next, and that's okay. Don't let perfection impede progress!

Pasqualina Sagarese

Peer Advisor

My name is Pasqualina Sagarese, and I am from Quito, Ecuador. So far, my college experience has been very busy and overwhelming, but a great new start. I have joined the international relations club on campus so far, but plan on joining others as well. A piece of advice I have received that has helped me in college is that you’re allowed to change your mind. Not everyone has a clear idea of what they want to do for the rest of their life, and I am glad that I was given advice to not be afraid of changing my major and pursuing my different interests.
