#BossedUp

Meet Mia Lama! She is an Industrial Engineering major and is in her third year at UM. Mia participated in UShadow the past three semesters in a row and says the experience is unlike any other!

Throughout her experience in UShadow, Mia shadowed an immigration attorney, an engineer at FPL, and a business analyst for a mortgage company.

“The opportunity to shadow is one that I highly value and am extremely grateful for. Each experience was different, and slowly but surely, I have gotten closer and closer to the career I can see myself in for my future. UShadow has helped me gain connections in my future professional field, and that is priceless. I have learned so much more about myself and my true interests."

"If it weren’t for UShadow, I honestly would have no idea where I could be headed with my degree. What is wonderful about it is that you’re growing your network, learning from people who are in a position you could potentially be in one day, and you also gain the confidence to reach out to other professionals in your field and ask them if you could just meet up for coffee or follow them around for a day. They have nothing to lose and neither do you!”

Assistant Director Career Events

I naively entered college after having attended a dual-enrollment high school for 2 years. I felt that having navigated community college, I was an expert at class scheduling, time management, and had the perfect work-life balance. As a college student I was a procrastinator, I would crash study for exams and I felt that having a job while going to school was counterproductive. I was very focused on building a social life since I left all my friends back home. I found myself obsessed with puzzles and games in my free time as a way of relaxing. If I could go back in time I would have visited more colleges and factored my personal happiness into the equation instead of just looking for the fastest path to medical school. Now I am a working professional and graduate student. I feel that this combination has put me in my sweet spot. I have a better understanding of how to manage my time, I understand the financial implications of my decisions and the need to set professional and personal goals evenly.
