#MakeMoves

Meet Brianna Valdivia! Brianna is a senior double majoring in Management and Public Relations with a minor in Business Law. Last summer she interned at UM in the Department of Special Events and Projects under the Advancement Division. Having this opportunity further solidified her passion for education and interest in pursuing a graduate degree in higher education.

Brianna started taking advantage of Toppel’s resources early in her college career. As a freshman, she participated in the Toppel Internship Program and as a junior, she was a part of the Professional Development Academy, and gained a scholarship from the experience. Brianna has also participated in two career crawls, the first being in D.C. and the other in NYC, where she served as a Crawl Leader.

Some advice from Brianna: “Do as much as you can to seize the diverse educational and career opportunities that are right in front of you - even if they are out of your comfort zone! Now is the time to make mistakes, discover new fields, and identify what you're passionate about. Oh! And don't forget to use Toppel!”

What is Professional Attire?

The first impression you make on a potential employer is incredibly meaningful and important. When you first meet, employers and graduate school representatives will form an assessment based on what you're wearing and how you carry yourself. Some tips to dress for success:

  • Err on the conservative side; it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed.
  • Business professional attire is not the same as business casual. When in doubt, choose professional, especially for UM Career Expos, Fairs, and Meet-Ups.
  • Look as polished as possible from head to toe.
  • Choose accessories that compliment your look, not distract from it. Less is more! Keep your look simple but classic.
  • An interview or career fair is not the time to make a bold fashion statement.
  • Check out the outfits on the left for examples of acceptable clothing and a list of items to avoid.
For some outfit inspiration, check-out our Pinterest page. If you're in need of some professional attire, stop by Sebastian’s Closet, where you can rent clothes for FREE for up to seven days.

Use Handshake to Get the Most Out of Expo

Before the Career Expo on Wednesday, make sure you register on Handshake, take a look at the list of companies attending, and conduct research on the ones you’re interested in.

Why do your research? Demonstrating knowledge about each company or recruiter you're talking to will make you stand out from the crowd and show the recruiter that you’re ready to be hired! Do your research by checking out the company's website, mission, open positions, and general information. Be prepared to talk to recruiters about how your skills, experiences, and career goals are a good fit with their company.

Also make sure to have some questions ready for company representatives that show your knowledge of their organization. Employers are not only looking for the most skilled candidate for the job – they are also looking for candidates who are genuinely interested in their company. The more you engage them, the better the impression you'll make.
