#MakeMoves

Meet Ross Milani, a senior pursuing a double major in industrial engineering & economics who will be working at Deutsche Bank's investment banking group post-graduation.

Ross participated in Toppel's London Career Crawl, where he had the opportunity to meet C-suite executives at major firms like Morgan Stanley and peers with similar professional ambitions.

Some advice from Ross: "If you really want to work in a specific field or at a specific company, don’t just apply online and hope you make it through the proverbial “black hole” for resumes. Reach out and network with professionals, especially if they’re UM alumni. You’d be surprised at how often people will respond if you reach out asking for their advice/about their background. Often times, these informational chats will really help develop a professional relationship and are far more helpful than simply saying you’re interested in an opening right off the bat when reaching out."

Steps to Take Before Expo

If you want to set yourself up for a positive career fair experience, you need to prepare.

Below are some steps you can take to make sure you're Expo ready:

  • Develop a strong resume: You can come to Toppel for walk-in advising for a resume or cover letter critique, M-F 9:00 am – 4:30 pm.
  • Create business cards: Design and order your business cards online on websites like Moo.com. You can also create your own by purchasing blank business cards at stores like Office Depot, and then using a computer and laser printer.
  • Research companies & organizations attending the Fair: Take a look at the list of companies attending on Handshake and conduct research on the ones you’re interested in.
  • Craft your elevator pitch: Don't get caught off guard by the "Tell me a little about yourself" question. Spend some time writing and practicing your 30-second pitch. Here’s a great article with tips on creating an elevator pitch.
