#MakeMoves

Meet grad student Christian Braden! Christian completed her Bachelor’s in Accounting at UM and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in the Business School’s Taxation program.

During the summer of her junior year, she attended Deloitte's Envision Leadership conference, which not only allowed her to learn more about Deloitte’s corporate culture, but also gave her the opportunity to meet several professionals and other students from across Florida. The highlight of her experience came after the conference because she was offered a full-time internship in the Miami office for the summer after her graduation from undergrad. After graduation from grad school this May, she will begin her full-time job at Deloitte as a tax consultant.

Some advice from Christian: “For anyone that is considering applying to graduate school, I would say ask a lot of questions. Whether it be to a current grad student or an admissions director at your dream school, there is a wealth of information that can be discovered when you simply ask the right questions. Graduate school is the opportunity for you to showcase what you’ve learned in undergrad and apply it to real-world scenarios. You want to make sure that you choose a school where you will not only be challenged, but also where you will have opportunities to develop personally and professionally. So, don’t be afraid to ask questions because graduate school is an important stepping stone towards creating your future."

U.S. News & World Report provides education rankings which can help you determine which graduate schools you are a strong applicant for and which schools fit your preferences. This site provides expanded profiles for more than 1,900 programs, information on entrance exam stats (GMAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT) for business, law, medicine, engineering, education and nursing, and graduate salary data (Law & MBA).

If you are considering going to graduate school, then you’re probably considering the cost of graduate school as well. What many students overlook, however, is the cost of applying to grad school. Here are some typical costs to keep in mind when planning your graduate application budget:

  • Application fee— Every school is different, but application fees typicall range between $50 to $85. Sometimes they’ll agree to waive this fee for you if you provide evidence of financial need.
  • Test costs- Many graduate schools require scores from a standardized test. The most common standardized test for graduate school is the GRE, which costs $160 to take. Keep in mind that other tests like the GMAT can be a bit pricier ($250). Also, the cost of taking a standardized test does not include the cost of having the testing company send your official scores to the schools.
  • Test Prep- Purchasing test prep books and practice tests can cost between $20-$40 and in-person test prep classes can cost over $1,000.
  • Requesting transcripts- At UM you can order your official transcript through CaneLink for $10. Some schools do not allow photocopies, so you may need to purchase an official transcript for each school you’re applying to.
In order to reduce financial stress, take all of these factors into account and create a budget for your graduate school application process.
