Meet UM Alumna, Samantha Ku! After graduating from the U with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 2010, Samantha worked at Citibank in New York. Today Samantha considers herself a reformed banker turned techie and currently leads Capital Operations at Square, Inc., a FinTech company focused on economic empowerment through financial services for the underserved.

Samantha says leaving traditional banking for ‘Fintech’ allowed her to learn what it means to have an impact. “At Square we are disrupting the industry and working toward financial inclusion to traditionally underserved communities.” To learn more about Samantha and how UM prepared her for life as a professional click here.

Professional Development Opportunity for STEM Students

The Professional Development Academy is a 9-week program designed to help you develop knowledge and skills for career readiness and success. The Academy will offer you the opportunity to explore critical competencies identified by employers. As a participant, you will receive the following: 1-credit transcript notation, Certificate of completion, Networking opportunities with employers who recruit ‘Canes, Opportunities for personalized industry connections.

The Academy will take place Wednesdays, August 29 - November 7, 4:00-6:00pm.

The Worst Career Advice that Students Receive from Parents

For many of us, the first career advice we receive is from our parents. Although parents try to be helpful during students' job searches, their well-meaning advice can sometimes be outdated. The working world has changed and continues to evolve - the advice that worked for previous generations may not reflect this new reality.

In this article Allison Green, the human resources expert who runs the popular "Ask a Manager" blog, goes over some of the worst pieces of career advice that students receive from their parents and better approaches students can take in today’s work world.

As the Communications Graduate Assistant, Carolina works to strengthen Toppel’s communications, by assisting with the marketing, planning, advertising, and promotion of Toppel's programs and events. She is especially proud of her role in putting together this weekly newsletter, The Toppel Insider.

Carolina earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from the University of Notre Dame and is currently pursuing her Masters in Fine Arts in Interactive Media specializing in user interface/ user experience design.
