#MakeMoves

Look who’s been making moves! Connor is a junior majoring in Marketing, minoring in Broadcasting & Media Management. He has worked for local NBC affiliates, MSNBC, and, most recently, was a summer intern at the TODAY Show.

Connor didn’t get these positions because of luck or being at the right place at the right time. On the contrary, Connor has been successful in his career because of the moves he’s made towards career readiness. Some of these include hosting his own radio and television shows, coming to Toppel for advising, and participating in the Toppel Career Crawl.

Some advice from Connor:
“Do something every day that reaches you further to your career goals. It can be as small as emailing a professor to look over your resume, connecting with someone on LinkedIn who you look up to, or as big as job shadowing someone in Miami for a couple hours. Over time, those little actions make a huge difference.”

Career Expo & Graduate Fair

Attend UM's signature recruiting event and meet recruiters from a variety of industries! Expo allows you to explore internship and full-time job opportunities both locally and nationally. It also allows you to explore local, national, and international graduate school programs. Students from all majors and class levels are encouraged to attend. It’s never too early or too late to start networking!

Come to Toppel for walk-in resume advising, available Tuesday September 5th, 9am – 4:30pm. Please note walk-in advising will not be available on September 6th, the day of Expo. Click here to for more information.

For day of Expo: Print at least 20 copies of your resume, bring your CaneID, dress professionally, and remember to collect business cards from recruiters for following-up after the event. Click here for info on what professional attire entails.

Handshake Mobile

Thousands of internship and job opportunities are now at your fingertips! Handshake has launched its first ever student mobile app. With the app, you’ll be able to explore jobs, favorite them, and then apply. You will also receive job recommendations tailored to your interests, notifications for applications deadlines, and messages from employers. iOS only for now, Android coming soon.

Toppelfest

Our biggest Toppelfest ever to take place was this past August 18th with food and games sponsored by: The Big Cheese, Courtney’s Cookies, The Salty Donut, Dough Miami, tap42, Sports Grill, City Furniture, Nextera Energy, SoBe Promos, and City Year. Shout out to DJ Juice, Atomik, and Sebastian the Ibis who kept the party going and to all the orientation staff for supporting the event.

Dr. Alexa Lord

Associate Director, Assessment & Communication

Alexa oversees the development and implementation of the Toppel Career Center’s assessment and communication plan (i.e., stats and marketing).

She earned a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and political science from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in psychological and brain sciences from Washington University in St. Louis. Her research focused on social-personality psychology, specifically on personality and achievement (e.g., how people’s self-perceptions and beliefs influence their coping, relationships, and goal attainment). Alexa’s background in statistical analyses and passion for personal and professional development brought her to where she is today—helping the Toppel Career Center and UM students reach their goals!
