#MakeMoves

Look who’s been making moves! Meet UM Alumna Colleen Kenyon, Associate Manager in Innovation Practice at Nielsen, who has been working at Nielsen since graduating in 2014. In her role as Associate Manager, Colleen helps manage client relationships and oversees analyst development and project management for the Innovation Practice department.

Collen says that she enjoys working at Nielsen because of the people, the culture, and client impact. “I find the work we do with our clients on their new product launches really exciting. The research we do helps inform key decisions that play out in the market place and it is truly rewarding to know we helped along the way. I love going to the store and seeing products that I have worked on!”

Some advice from Colleen: “Be curious about whatever ignites you. Know your field of expertise and always keep learning more. Take advantage of every opportunity and soak in as much as you can. You never know where your experiences and [the] people you meet will lead you. 2) Sign up for mock interviews/resume reviews with employers at Toppel! This is a great way to get in front of employers and helps you stand out. I *swear* it is how I got hired at Nielsen!”

7 Tips for Young Professionals

Starting your first job or internship can be intimidating. While you’re probably excited to have gotten the opportunity, making the transition from the classroom to the office can be daunting.

Check-out this short-read for some great tips on preparing for a new job and the lifestyle changes that come with entering the “real” world.

Conduct Company Research with Handshake
& LinkedIn

Conducting company research is a key step in the job search process. Handshake and LinkedIn are both great networks you can use to research companies you are interested in. These are some ways you can gain valuable information about a company through Handshake and LinkedIn:

  • Look for other UM alumni who work at the company you’re interested in and reach out to them -- LinkedIn is an especially useful tool for looking for alumni. There is an Alumni page for every college and university that lets you sort and filter alumni.
  • Handshake is especially great for getting recruiters’ contact information. For example, on Handshake when you visit a company profile, often times there is a public staff list and the university recruiter’s contact information is present. The company has someone in this role for a reason – they’re your primary contact for any questions you may have about the position and for expressing your interest in it!
This article covers other ways to conduct company research, such as using the company website, social media, and review sites.
